Reading this post I was kind of hoping that Prior would sport some long straggly hair and a long goatee and go behind the mound and get psyched up rubbing up the ball. Than later on in life become a lousy Cardinals announcer.

AZ Phil has a pitch-by-pitch breakdown of the start today at The Cub Reporter.

What I got from AZ Phil was that Alfonso Soriano's defense in CF is going to make us miss Juan Pierre. Yeesh. And Cliff Floyd's probably should be DHing in the AL.

Alfonso could play with his glove on the wrong hand and I still won't miss Slappy.

He would have to be pretty bad to make up for the major increase in offensive production. The Cliff Floyd thing really is a concern though.

No doubt, his bat will make more than make up for it. But his D is going to be brutal.

He could get alot better. My hopeful scenerio is that Pie is just hitting the cover off the darn ball at AAA and by mid season, or around then, he is called up. And Soriano moves to RF and Pie plays CF. .

Plus you have to figure that Soriano will show some improvement as the season progresses. Not so much with JP.

I doubt very seriously that I'll be missing Pierre's noodle arm, regardless of how Soriano does. There's nothing worse than a CF that can barely reach the infield with his throws, IMO.

Hopefully Soriano will improve. I just don't like Pierre, and never will. Hated that move from the beginning.

Sending Prior to Iowa was the best thing for him, IMO. I'm sure he's pretty peeved about it. *GOOD* He could use a little anger in his life.

Our outfield will be a three ring circus. Don't think we'll be top billing on Web Gems very often. However, probably good fodder for the blooper reel. Let's hope the offense they bring makes up for runs that will sore when the ball donks them on the head.

I can't stand Pierre and think he took some awful routes to the ball, but he's a better defender than Soriano.

Hendry said. “We’ll make a spot for him when he’s ready. I promise you that.”

I hope he means that.

Well...he has held a spot for him for 3 years when he wasn't ready, so I would imagine he has his spot when he finally is :D

At least I hope...

I don't necessarily agree. Soriano's main problem right now is judging the ball off the bat, once he gets that down he'll do much better. We've got good speed in the OF, and pretty strong arms all around. Jones really struggled with his release point last year, causing him to skip most of his throws back in. This spring he's shown a much more accurate throwing arm. Murton and Jones have both been error-free this spring, and Murton has added 2 assists as well. Soriano has made 3 errors in 19 games while adding 1 assist, but that is to be expected when switching positions. His transition from 2B to LF went about the same way last year, but he ended up with 22 outfield assists as well.

We should take this Prior anger thing into our own hands! Slash his tires! That'll get him really good and angry, and then he'll win the Cy Young award!

My biggest fear is that, while Prior improves in AAA, Marquis and Miller pitch just well enough (likely getting some wins even while allowing a fair amount of runs), that management decides that if ain't broke, don't fix it, and a spot isn't opened up for Prior.

If this happens, it will both hurt the team's chances in the short-term and likely irrevocably damage their relationship with him for the long-term. I would hope they show more loyalty to him than Miller/Marquis, but unfortunately familiarity sometimes breeds contempt.

Prior would have to revert to his former self for this to become an issue. If he just makes little strides at AAA, he'll just be getting to the same level of effectiveness as Marquis and Miller. He's got a lot of work to do.

However, if he can revert to anywhere near his former self, they will open a spot for him. They'd probably deal Miller.

I sure hope so. Here's what worries me:

What if, say, Miller and/or Marquis are a game or 2 above .500 at the end of April, with ERAs around 4.50? (I think this is a very possible scenario.) Meanwhile, Prior does well in Iowa, but isn't totally dominant (think Prior circa 2005, not ca. 2003).

Do the Cubs make a spot for him, especially if they're having some success at the time? Previous experience tells me, very possibly not.

If we were talking about Guzamn I'd agree with this assessment. They will make room for Prior, particularly since they have Guzman waiting in the wings if Prior flops.
