This is fantastic news. With the way Wuertz had been jerked around the last few years, plus his recent injury, I was worried he wouldn't be guaranteed a spot on the roster... while worse bets like Eyre and Dempster would get spots just because of what they're getting paid.

How has he done so far this spring??

2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K since his return from the injury.

Very good strikeout/walk ratio and K/9 innings. :D

I like the move.. But I would've preferred a couple more appearances before they decided it for sure.

They can still change their mind if he struggles the rest of the spring. Just making an announcement now isn't binding.

Why?

It shouldn't be based on spring training in the first place.

Look at his last three years. I think that should count for more than another handful of ST appearances.

OK... so all of Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz, Guzman, Cherry, Cotts, Ohman, Wood would make the roster if ready for the roster. What happens to 2-3 of them when all are ready? Which 2 miss the opening day cut?

Looks like Cotts and Wood right now. Cotts still has 2 option years, I believe, and Wood may be getting primed for a quick DL stint with this triceps strain.

Seriously? Wood's triceps strain is that bad? I hadn't heard anything about this...geez.

I don't really think it's that bad, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Cubs hold him on the DL for a few weeks to relieve any media pressure on him, not to mention give them a bit more time to shop an extra reliever + jacque jones around for something.

I must say, in most years, I would make an "it could be wuertz" joke, but he has really deserved his bullpen spot the last 2 seasons.

Wuertz looked like he was in midseason form last time I saw him pitch. He is one of our top relief pitchers and def deserves to make the team. Great move by Piniella.

Lou knows Wuertz has been good and that not everything depends on spring performance.

YES!

I am just continually impressed with Lou.

Was Dusty really this bad? That with every Lou decision I rejoice?
