Bruce, have you noticed any similiarities or differences between Perry and Matthews/Clines as far as work ethic and their abilities to drive home what they are trying to teach to the hitters, despite it being early?

I'll take some more koolaid, please.

I see Lou's really liking Murton in that 2-hole.

On the HBO special with Lou and ARod, Lou was filmed saying that Murton is either a 2 or an 8 hole hitter (while watching him in bp).

Yep I saw that also.

Yeah, like night and day differences. Just look at the Felix Pie thing. In a short time, they spotted something with his swing and adjusted it. We'll see how it works. This crew seems much more technically sound. And the coaches here work extremely hard.

I am loving the new staff so far.

I agree with most of you....this is an ideal lineup. My only change would be a swap of Soriano in Right and Jones in Center. Minor detail I guess.

Loving the lineup. It's far from the most effective lineup that could be placed out there, but it's probably the closest we'll get without completely overturning conventional baseball wisdom... a task better reserved for shouting matches at the bar.

Bruce, do you think Theriot has a legit shot and starting at SS, or are they just trying him there since it's Spring Training?

I'd love to see him handle all his chances today and prove he can be adaquate at worst.

Personally, I'd really like to see the Scott Moore experiment at SS keep going. If he can handle it even relatively poorly, his bat would be a huge improvement over Izturis.

I loved what they had to say at the convention. They all were knowledgable and direct.

Good to see Theriot at SS and I definitely dig Murton at the 2-hole.

I'm getting the impression that you prefer your new working environment...... I could be totally off though.

Maybe my office should hire Gerald Perry to improve my working environment.

okay, so someone please explain Lou's comment on Murt being #2 or #8 hitter. What exactly does he mean by that?

Thanks in advance.

It means Lou like Murton as a #2 or #8 hitter...

That was on the HBO special. Just a breif snippet. What you guys have to remember, this could have been Murtons first day, or even second day reporting to camp. Could have been Lou's first look at the kid. Just because he said that early, doesn't mean Murt can't prove to Lou he is much better than his first impression looked like.

I doubt Theriot will be the starter initally but he will get his looks. It was reported in today's papers that sees Piniella sees Ryan as the super INF sub. They plan to play him at 2B, 2B, and SS. If Izturis is injured or more ineffective than usual offensively, I think Theriot could get some starts.

Here's my take, which may be an optimistic one.

I didn't see the show people are quoting, but Lou has talked about how Murton is a patient hitter and how he saw the most pitches / AB of any Cub last year. Murton has talked about hitting in the #2 slot and how it's important to give Soriano a chance to run if he's on base. Although Murton is a good pure hitter, there have been some questions about how much and how quickly his power is going to develop.

So I'm guessing that Lou values that approach (patience, awareness of situational baseball) in the #2 & #8 slots. Those slots are also not traditional power slots, which allows Murton time to adjust and develop more power without trying to force changes to match a predetermined batting slot.

Or maybe not.

That's prob exactly the plan. BTW I can do PBP for the first few innings or so. . is that alright with you?
