He faced live hitters today..

I don’t know how he felt afterward, and maybe he breaks down next week, but I do know this: Today, Mark Prior LOOKED out-freakin’-great. Prior circa-vintage 2003. He threw fast balls, breaking balls, and change-ups over a 10 minute period with a free and easy delivery, good pace and rhythm, and he seemed to have excellent velocity and location. Prior must have impressed the hitters, too, because D-Lee gave Prior an “attaboy” high-five as Prior was leaving the mound, and hitters don’t normally do that.

He'll be good this year. I think he's determined to prove doubters wrong. The Cubs have been cautious with him overall. And the biggest factor may be that he's looking very close to a big payday as a free agent. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I think Mark will have a great season. At worst, I think he may fade down the stretch due to lack of innings in recent years.

crossing fingers. I can't wait to hopefully see prior take the ball on schedule during ST. if he does. We all have reason to be excited.

Great. Now you did it. That premature high five just broke Prior's hand. Happy now?

Disclaimer: I'm obviously 100% not serious.

We've all been down this road before. I'll continue to believe Prior won't be healthy until he pitches in 30 actual regular season games.

fixed for me

Also from AZ Phil:

Fan: Hey, Jeff, would you rather be here or in Indianapolis?

(NOTE: The NFL scouting combines are being held there this week)

Jeff Samardzija: I would rather be here.

That would be so freakin awsome if he came back throwing in the mid 90's and with the old movement on his pitches..he was throwing the fast ball last year at around 89-91, but you could tell it didnt have that movement like it did in '03..Lets hope he got his velocity back..man im so freakin pumped up for the season

Dateline, Feb. 23, 2007
The Cubs suffered a major setback when it was announced today that Mark Prior tore his elbow ligament yesterday while exchanging high-fives with Derek Lee while leaving the mound. Dr. James Andrews will perform "Tommy John" surgery on Prior next week; Prior will miss the entire 2007 season but hopes to be ready for the beginning of Spring Training in 2008.

Absolutely.

I am, however, currently in a state of "pre-optimism" about Mark for this year.

I really believe he'll have a Comeback Player of the Year type of season, but like many other fans, I need to see him stay healthy. I think he will, but we've been stung before.

Didn't Lee break his wrist again with that, too?
