Hendry and Zambrano's his agents were scheduled to meet yesterday (in person or over the phone) and again today.

Representatives for Cubs pitching ace Carlos Zambrano met with general manager Jim Hendry on Sunday night in an unsuccessful effort to reach agreement on a one-year contract and avoid a potentially nasty arbitration hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

The sides are expected to resume talks today as the Cubs enter the final 24 hours before what would be their first arbitration hearing since 1993 (Mark Grace).

According to http://www.chicagosports.com Big Z says he's "85% signed for a one year deal". I have no idea what that means.

Maybe we can get Roger Clemens to come in and address the issue of percentages since he's currently 80 percent sure he'll retire.

I would take it to mean they're very close to a 1-yr deal for the purposes of avoiding the arbitration hearing, which will allow them to work on the long-term deal during spring training.

I love this line

Zambrano said he's optimistic a deal will be done, based on his relationship with Hendry.

"I've known him since I was 16 years old, and he was the man who made everything possible to sign me," he said. "I don't only talk to him about contracts, I talk to him about life and family and things. He's kind of like my friend."

It seems that Hendry has a good relationship with a lot of players and I think it's because he treats them like humans and not numbers or assets.

I think it just means they need to add 15% more money.

Nice!!

I thought it meant that he's already signed "Carlos Zambr" and the other 15% of his signature (the "ano") still needs to be signed.

It's somewhat settling to read that Zambrano and Hendry have spoken directly. So when Carlos says he feels "85-90% sure an agreement will be reached" he isn't talking from a one sided perspective:

Zambrano said on Monday that he talked to Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, and was to meet later in the day with his agent, Barry Praver.

"I spoke to Jim earlier today and he told me, 'Don't worry about anything,'" Zambrano said. "We will get some agreement. I don't think we'll go to the trial tomorrow."

Maybe Z can be the next Yogi.

Why? Is he planning to make a "park ranger" look foolish? Or planning to steal those picanic baskets?

Posted
The fact that this negotiation hasn't been agreed at this point can't be good. If the Cubs go to arbitration with Z, it could only hurt relations and result in lower odds of signing a long-term contract.

He looks like he's taken a few already.

at halftime of the kansas-kstate game, espn said Zambrano is expected to sign a 1 year deal before going to arbitration. If this holds true I would expect to see him sign a long term deal in the next couple of weeks.

Same news as before. They're just passing along Zambrano's 85%.

What time is the hearing scheduled for?

I saw some kind of interview with Z where he said (paraphrase) that either way arby works out, there's still 6 weeks to figure out a long-term deal.

He didn't sound too worried about it, or that he was worried about the arby deadline.
