Manager Lou Piniella was asked about his first impressions of former Notre Dame two-sport athlete Jeff Samardzija, who gave up football to sign with the Cubs.

"I've liked everything I saw -- but the hair," Piniella said. "He could use a little trim."

Piniella said he won't demand that Samardzija, who sports shoulder-length locks, get a haircut. Samardzija, though, can see the writing on the wall.

"I'll probably go to Super Cuts for nine bucks," he said.

please please please don't let this turn into the Yankees "short hair and no facial hair" thing. It sounds like Lou was joking and I hope he was.

What a ridiculous thing to fight with players about.

He said he wasn't going to make him. It's not a big deal and Piniella isn't making it one.

Last season the Cubs made him trim it and it was still way past the ears. This isn't the Yankees.

I kind of like the Yankees rule...not that I have anything against long hair, but I think it promotes a "team first" attitude, and not such a "me first" stance that a lot of guys have these days...I wouldn't be upset of the Cubs adopted it.

If I remember right, I think Sean Gallagher told me once that the Cubs *do* have a thing about short hair and no facial hair. Perhaps that was just for minor leaguers but not sure...

I was trying to remember Sean's comments as well. I know he got his hair cut before his appearance at the Cubs Convention but I was wanting to say it was more because of family than any rule in the system.

Giambi always thinks of the team when he's shooting himself in the butt with HGH.

Point being - of all the ways players act selfishly, I'm least concerned with hair length & facial hair. You can be a "team first" guy and still like to be an individual. Why does long hair and facial hair mean you're not a team player? The connection is totally lost on me.

I think there is some kind of Cub rule though, because when we got a couple of guys on the Chiefs toward the end of last year in a trade (don't remember who or which trade), one of them - a pitcher if I recall- had to go and get a haircut or shave or something.

My memory is bad.

I think everyone should be required to have goatees. Or at least Matt Clement soul patches.

Some of us don't have the ability to grow a good goatee or soul patch.

And some of us have the ability to look like Chewbacca after a one night stand with Jabba the Hut.

Use your imagination, on my ability for "facial hair."

Besides, I always wanted to pervert Star Wars.

guys with goatees are weird.

when i envision a man with a goatee, i see someone with jean shorts, white socks, and black shoes in a pantera hat flipping his 4-wheeler into a creek. he may or may not have a gold chain and a tucked-in tank top to show off his "no fear" tattoo.

goatees have become the new mullets.
