I think all this hype over who has the #1 recruiting class and stars is a bunch of nonsense. Sure it does correlate to getting good athletes and if you continue to do it over time you will build a good program but it doesn't guarantee anything. Look at a team like the Wisconsin Badgers, year in and year out they are ranked in the middle of the Big Ten conference in recruiting but consistently churn out NFL players, and have arguably put themselves into the conversation as being a top team year in and year out with scUM and tOSU.

since alvarez took over, they've been recruiting kids that fit their system. they realize they probably won't get a lot of gulf kids or california kids to fill skill positions so they get the big road-graders up front and base their team on size and strength. doing this probably won't allow them to compete with the faster SEC schools for the national championship year in and year out, but it will allow them to compete for the Big Ten title perrenially.

If I'm not mistaken, the only Big Ten school that spends less money recruiting than Wisconsin , is Northwestern.

makes sense. i don't think that either school really leaves the midwest very much in terms of recruiting.

Wiscy gets the occational player from NJ but other than that, they don't leave the midwest for much.

That's a great point and it's worked out very good for them.

I'm reading there are now allegations that Reggie Bush contacted McKnight before he signed his LOI.

You mean like McKnight saying that Bush called him a few times? The NCAA will do nothing, just like it did about Leinart and Jarrett and Bush.

This rule is stupid anyway. It's kind of a lot to expect a football program to control what people outside the program are doing.

While it may not be the case this time, if Reggie Bush just decided to call this kid and try to talk him into going to USC, how can USC stop him from doing that?

Supposedly, McKnight had questions about the probabtion on so he listened in on a conference call between Carroll and Bush to help calm his fears.

McKnight mentioned this in his presser, and suddenly Carroll goes on damage control and now the kid and his high school coach are denying any contact ever took place.

I doubt anything will be done, but it does appear a violation took place.

At least as of a couple of years ago, Minnesota spent the least amount of money on their football program in most categories. They're spending more on coaching now, though, so maybe that's changing. I'll have to find the link when I get home.

Northwestern does recruit mostly in Illinois and Ohio, but they do quite a bit in Texas and California, as well. Pennsylvania, too, among others.

And recruit talent is still probably less than 50% of the overall picture. Coaching, makeup, and how they fit into the system is the majority of it.

EDIT: This year broke down like this

Illinois - 5

Ohio - 5

Missouri - 2

Wisconsin - 1

Michigan - 2

Minnesota - 1

California - 1

Pennsylvania - 1

Kansas - 1

In 2006, though, for recruits outside of the midwest, they had 3 from Texas, 1 from Jersey, 1 from Georgia, 2 from Pennsylvania, 1 from Florida, and 1 from Arizona. Pretty much depends on the coaching staff changes.
