You know, it's amazing. The Bears went to the Super Bowl last year, and rather than having very few picks to work with (which is often the case with successful teams, having traded picks for veteran players), Angelo picked up 9 new players to bring into the mix.

I'm sorry, but that's very nicely done. Tops in the NFC and still harvesting a bumper crop of new talent. Now----surely not all of them will work out, but having the picks to bring them in increases the odds. If he hits on, say, 1/3 of those 2nd day picks people will praise him for finding yet another good player in the late rounds.

And plus.....there's something to be said for having young, fresh legs on special teams to get down the field quickly.

I don't think it's all that amazing for a SB team to have 9 picks. He went in with 7, and made a trade to get 2. Indy got 9 new bodies as well, 6 in the first 4 rounds. New England brought in 9 as well, while New Orleans had 7. Washington was a team with few picks.

Most successful teams don't trade picks for veterans. It's really not that big of a deal.

You know, at first, I thought those numbers were some sort of ranking of the players' ability. I wasn't even thinking about jersey numbers. I was thinking, man, the scouts really hated Wolfe.

lol, what I meant to say is that I don't see him having the same success in the NFL as Turner has had. Turner is almost as quick as Wolfe and yet is 230+ pounds. I wonder if the Bears even bothered to work him out a few years back.

Yeah, they probably didn't thinking Benson was the guy and TJ would be fine.

I think MT is still on the trading block, right? Sounded like SD resigned him to a deal, but someone was saying that would actually help facilitate a trade.

Yeah, draft day in 2004 I think they Bears were in their "Terry Shea - Let's be like KC" phase.

Last I heard SD wants a ton for MT.

Turner signs one-year tender with Chargers

NFL.com wire reports

http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/SD/10151775

SAN DIEGO (April 26, 2007) -- Michael Turner, the backup to NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson, can now leave the Chargers only if he's traded.

Turner signed the $2.35 million, one-year tender he received from the team after becoming a restricted free agent.

April 20 was the deadline for restricted free agents to sign offers from other teams. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith put the highest possible tender on Turner. That meant if another team signed Turner to an offer sheet, the Chargers could have either matched it or received that team's first- and third-round draft picks.

Chicago Tribune[/url]"]The Bears, who secured key elements of their organization with contract extensions for general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith, have taken care of pro personnel director Bobby DePaul with a three-year extension.

College scouting director Greg Gabriel also is expected sign a multiyear extension.

DePaul and Gabriel have been under strong consideration for top personnel spots elsewhere in the NFL, DePaul with the Redskins and Texans, Gabriel with the Bills before assistant general manager Tom Modrak had another year added to his contract.

Yeah, these are the guys who feed Angelo the info to pick up low-priced mid round picks that become starters.

Good move. Sign Gabriel to a long-term as well, please.

Along the same lines of the last 3 or 4 posts, I know a player personnel exec. for a Canadian Football team and asked him about how one goes about getting into that line of work (I have some collegiate football experience, so know something about that area). He suggested he might be able to help me get a foot in the door (probably as an intern) with an NFL team. I see him regularly at the gym, but have not further discussed the matter with him. I've been meaning to develop a list of questions (paid internship, length of internship, location, job afterward, benefits if it becomes a full job...), but couldn't think of many more. I'd really like to do it, but could use some suggestions on what else I should inquire about. Anyone have any thoughts?

Darius, we hardly knew ye:

Undrafted Notre Dame running back Darius Walker backed out of his agreement with the Bears.

Chicago will only keep three tailbacks in 2007 and Walker was a long shot to overtake Garrett Wolfe. Walker would be a nice fit in Indianapolis.

Kid's got to do what he feels is right. Now that he's lost his NCAA eligibility and wasn't drafted, he probably realizes he needs to be given a shot on a team that has few RB options.

I'm thinking Green Bay might be another decent shot, if they would even offer the invite.

HA! Angelo's head looks photoshopped on there. Just a weird looking picture.
