I consider that a loss for everyone in the NL except the Cards.

I disagree only because the Cardinals really don't have enough decent pitchers right now. Which 5 pitchers are they going to start that's going to be better than Weaver, even if you don't consider Weaver to be very good?

Agreed. Plus what depth do they have when injuries happen? Injuries will happen, they happen to virtually every rotation.

I really dont think it is gonna be that hard to throw Kip wells and Ryan Franklin into the rotation and have them do better then what Marquis and Weaver/Ponson did last year. Meaning Wainwright would have to match Suppan and have an Era in the 4.30 area. Wainwright might not do that good but I wouldnt expect him to be that much worse. So i really dont think there will be a dropoff in the cards rotation. In fact I expect a little bit of improvement just getting rid of Marquis and his over 6.00 ERA.

I hope this is true. Excluding his rookie season, one in NY and last year, he has been pretty solid throughout his career. Last year he was AWFUL in the regular season and PHENOMINAL in his 5 postseason starts. I sure dont expect him to maintain his 5+ ERA next year and the following years.

I still think he's a good pitcher, just went through a bumpy patch. Ok it was some BIG bumps but still.

Who is going to pitch for the Cards this year?

No seriously. Who?

I like the potential of Wainwright. Im really high on him. A good 1-2 punch of Carpenter and Wainwright will give teams a struggle.

Carpenter

Reyes

Wainwright

Wells

Looper

Not sure what you would get out of that rotation.

looper in the rotation? i thought larussa mentioned it in passing but nobody took it seriously, like saying all the starting jobs are up for grabs.

Wow. I'm really wondering what kind of voodoo LaRussa has planned for this year then.

ERA+ for 2006

Carpenter: 143 (good)

Reyes: 86 (terrible.....but barely pitched, 85 innings)

Wainwright: 141 (barely pitched.....75 innings)

Wells: 70 (horrid, barely pitched last year though, hasn't been over 100 since '03)

Looper: 124 (again, barely pitched though....he's a reliever)

These are mostly relievers being thrust into the starting rotation, yes? What kind of rotation is this? Seriously, if they win with this there needs to be a federal investigation. That's worse than our starting rotation last year, and it isn't even close. How many runs are they expecting to get out of Pujols? 300? What's the plan in Stl?

if looper to the rotation is true they are counting on 2 converted relievers, wells, reyes. does ERA+ include an adjustment for relievers? if not, the 2006 numbers looks even worse.

From everything I have heard down here in St Louis on the radio, is that Tony and Duncan really like Franklin. I think that the 5th spot is his to lose spring training. If he pitches like he did as a starter in Seattle, he could be a nice find at the 4th or 5th pithcer spot.

Wainright isn't really a converted reliever. He's a lifelong starter who pitched in relief last year.

Looks like it's going to be a one year deal.'

Link.

Weaver, 30, was deciding whether to push for a one- or two-year contract, FOXSports.com reported Thursday. He apparently decided to go for a one-year deal so he can explore free agency after this season. The Cardinals also had pursued Weaver, but were said to have bowed out as the Mariners' efforts gained steam.

thats true, but stamina may be an issue, maybe not.

He must be their version of Jason Marquis then, because the last time Ryan Franklin started in Seattle his ERA+ was 85. 88 the year before that.

I think he was relieving in PHI & CIN last year
