It's now official.

JS is forgoing footbal and sticking with the Cubs fulltime.

Excellent. Where did you see/hear that?

Bruce Levine called into Dan Patrick's show to report it.

I believe he said Samardzija could get up to 7 million.

Trying to steal Hendry's thunder is he? I wondered what that horrible sound was coming out of Southbend.

South Bend has no problem with him. Both his sports are completely done now, and he was just as important for the baseball team as the football team. Really, the only people who get hurt by this are the people who were looking for a receiver in the NFL draft, as the rest of the receivers just became a little more valuable (because teams are always worried that there will be a run on receivers in the draft, and now there's 1 less of them).

Just like the Cubs took a chance on drafting him last year, some NFL team will take a chance on drafting, it just won't be in the first round. How long does an NFL team hold a players rights after drafting him?

I don't know. What if he doesn't enter the NFL Draft? If he decides to switch back to football at some point would he then have to go through the draft?

Well, if he has finished his college eligibility he doesn't have to declare for the NFL draft, that is only if you are an underclassmen. Has he finished his eligibility?

Now that the Deal is signed. Did the Cubs view JS as a 1st round talent? or put another way, Is he a better prospect in their eyes than Colvin?

Nice first Draft by Wilken, and kudos to Hendry for taking a risk by drafting a guy that many thought wouldn't sign on to play baseball fulltime.

I think you have to declare for the draft to be drafted, nobody can take a chance on him because there won't be the option. (maybe not then if he is right ^, mine was just a guess)

I doubt that. If that were the case, then no potential 1st round pick would ever declare for the draft, they'd rather allow all 32 teams to bid for them as free agents.

I think a team could draft him, and would then retain his rights for a certain period.

Again I don't know for sure, but I would think he would have to declare for the draft even though he was a Senior. I also assume you must go through a draft process before you can enter the league. You can't just not declare and be a free agent.

He will most surely be drafted, probably in 6th or 7th round. You never know.

Drew Henson was drafted while he was still giving baseball a shot. He was drafted a couple times I think.

Not saying this is in the thinking or going to happen but I was just curious on the rule itself. Do the Cubs have to wait for a year after the draft to trade him or a year after the signing?

Not sure about that, look at guys like Dave Winfield who was drafted in all three sports (basketball, football, and baseball) I highly doubt he declared for football. There are many others that have been drafted in multiple sports.

The reason I assume you have to declare is because I know that you have to declare for the NBA draft regardless of what year in school you were. So I am guessing based on that.

I don't know if they think he was better than Colvin, but they did view him as a 1st round talent. Also remember that Samardzija was rated a great deal higher than Colvin by other analysts, but he slipped only because of the football issue and nothing else.

Why was it ok to misspell football in what you quoted but not South Bend?

Where are the Samardzija rumors coming from? Is there speculation going around that I haven't heard about?

It's been reported in recent days that you might see Samard zija, Samard zija, Samardzija, sign a baseball only contract before the Senior Bowl practices begin.

Am I the only one who caught this? If this was a brady bunch reference...very funny.

I will hereforth refer to him as Mardzija, Mardzija, Mardzija.

Or Marsha.

Because I'm from South Bend (actually Mishawaka, but they're the same town)

I understand. I can see Mishawaka being misspelled more often than South Bend.

Do I get a cookie for calling it?

And for the person who asked, Samardzija is most certainly a first round baseball talent.

If I get a cookie too. I called 1 post before you.

I like oatmeal and Raisin, Raisin.

I was going for one of those Sesame Street spelling things, to sound out the word.

Stu --- pid

Stu - pid

Stupid

But I like Marsha.
