Left-hander Neal Cotts and the Cubs agreed Wednesday to a one-year, $825,000 deal that comes six weeks after he was acquired in a trade from the White Sox.

Cotts, who made $400,000 last season when he struggled out of the bullpen for the White Sox, has one bonus that could be difficult to reach -- $150,000 for being named World Series MVP. The Cubs, who've undergone a major overhaul in the offseason, haven't won the World Series since 1908.

I'll go on record in saying that if Neal Cotts is the World Series MVP, I will personally pay that bonus.

(now watch, it'll happen and I'll be broke forever)

I think we could raise the sufficient funds here...maybe Tim would even give you free premium for life.

The smart thing to do would be to collect enough money to place a bet that would cover that bonus. The Cubs are listed as 9-1 to win the WS next season on one site (the Cubs are always overbet due to their popularity and the fact that everybody wants to make money off them when they finally do win).

So, collect about $17,000, bet on the Cubs to win the WS, and then you're covered, unless he somehow wins the MVP without the team winning.

If he's traded to another team, that teams picks up the cost of the bonus, and we're off the hook.

So Cotts can make you eat a shoe instead of crow?

I hope we are laughing about this in October!

In a good way.

I bet someone could get a bookie to give a line on Cotts winning the WS MVP. My guess is, we could get 20,000 to 1 odds on it too.

That sounds low Vance its more like 150,000 to 1 lol at least

I'll help him pay for it.

That's such a cruel bonus. They might as well just dangle the money over his head and then kick him in the balls while making his entire family watch.

Watch, Cotts will be the World Series MVP in 2008.

For what team?

Which other teams don't we like? The Brewers? The Padres? The Mets? Probably one of those 3

Yeah, that's pretty much the only frontier left short of, say, a Sox or Cards dynasty.
