I'm bored, so I thought I'd line-up what the team looks like and what we might need to add or subtract.

Here's the roster as I see it.

C: Michael Barrett

1b Derrek Lee

2b: Mark Derosa

SS: Cesar Izturis

3b: Aramis Ramirez

OF: Matt Murton, Jacque Jones, Alphonso Soriano

SP: Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Rich Hill, Jason Marquis, Mark Prior

Bullpen: Ryan Dempster, Bob Howry, Scott Eyre, Michael Wuertz, Neal Cotts, Will Ohman and Kerry Wood.

Bench: Daryle Ward, Angel Pagan, Henry Blanco, Ryan Theriot

That's 24 players.

There's one spot still available. It 's likely a bench spot, but could be another bullpen arm.

Cedeno or Moore could be a bench option.

If Miller is healhty, the Cubs are going to have a roster crunch. Novoa could also be a possibility in the bullpen as well.

I think the Cubs will make one more signing for a bench player. I also suspect Floyd will be signed and Jacque will be dealt. If that happens, a CF will need to be added. It could be Pie or it could be someone from outside the organization.

I haven't been keeping up on things very well over the holidays but won't Wood be in the bullpen to start the year?

As the team stands right now, Moore has to be on the bench over Cedeno. DeRosa and Theriot are the only backup 3B, and neither of them are ideal there. Cedeno is probably 3rd on the depth chart for the 2 positions he plays (ss and 2b).

Ideally, Moore would be better off going to Iowa possibly build up some trade value rather than sitting on the bench.

That's what I'd like also, but unless they bring in a guy like you were talking about in the Aaron Boone thread, Moore becomes a necessity.

After adding Wood, there is definitely a glut in the bullpen, especially if Miller and Prior are both ready to go.

If everyone arrives at camp healthy, I expect a trade to alleviate some of the bullpen crowding.

With Cotts, Wood, Eyre, Howry, Wuertz, and Ohman, there is no reason for Dempster to be on the roster.

There seems to be a lot of teams wanting to add a bullpen arm. I wonder if the possible health of Miller and Prior is keeping the Cubs from pulling the trigger on a trade. I read where Cotts is going to be stretched out in ST in case Prior or Miller is unable to grab the fifth starter's job.

We definitely need a backup third baseman. I was hoping that the Cubs would have signed Jeff Cirillo, but he's off the market now. Moore is probably their best option right now. With Ramirez a mainstay at the hot corner for the next five years, the best that Moore can do with this club is a backup job. He's young, plays good defense, and has a bit of pop. Plus, he can't be worse than John Mabry.

If Moore is going to be the back-up to Ramirez, he could still start the season at Iowa and only be brought up if Ramirez is going to be out a significant amount of times.

Although he could fill a bench role probably better than a veteran retread could, and for less money to boot.

True. It could be better for him if he's getting regular PT at Iowa than getting one start every 10-12 games as he likely would if he were up with the big club. I can't see him getting more than 6-10 AB's per week with the Cubs. With Ward on the bench, Moore wouldn't be the first LH option.

I'm thinking Hendry envisions DeRosa as the back-up 3B with, most likely, Ryan Theriot covering 2B.

Moore could use more seasoning at AAA. I'd like to see split time between 3B and SS this season in Iowa with Cedeno splitting time between SS and 2B.

Moore only has about a week's worth ABs above AA, given that and his future ceiling, I don't think it would be wise to potentially drop his trade value or stunt his development for a back-up role to a player who'll be here for the next 4 years.

I think it is possible, and I would like to see it happen, that the Cubs sign Floyd and not trade Jones. I think the deciding factor in trading Jones will be the play of Pie this spring. If Felix looks ready, Jones along with a reliever, if Prior and/or Miller are ready, will likely be dealt.

There are a lot of changes I would like to see happen. Izturis for one, but I'm not certain how realistic they are. I haven't had any conversations with other GMs and player's agents recently.

Otherwise, with the possible addition of Floyd and then the developing Pie situation, I think this looks like what Cubs fans can expect to see on Opening Day.

Any interest in a return of Phil Nevin for a bench role?

If he'd come back for a reasonable price, and would be happy being the backup 1B and first RH option off the bench, heck yes.

I doubt he would want to, though.

I think the person to ask that question to would be Phil. With Lee and Ward already on the roster and 1B being Nevin's best position, he would be relegated to strictly being the top right-handed power bat off the bench. He might not be okay with that amount of playing time.

If he is, he would make a nice righty/lefty pinch hit combo with Ward. Even though he has history at 3B, I still think DeRosa would be used as the primary back-up to Ramirez.

Do you see Mark Prior on the rotation at the start of the season? Does anyone?

Until I see what happens in ST, I can't answer that. He's not rehabbing from surgery, so right now I don't see why he couldn't be there.

I'm not a doctor and I haven't seen his medical reports, so I don't know.

Considering there is still four months to Opening Day, I don't know why he shouldn't be ready to go.

You'd think that, and still I doubt he'll pitch before May.
