Mark Loretta is the ultimate MLB gamer. Why would the cubs, or any one for that matter not want this guy? He is a perfect #2 hitter (something we dont have). We can sign him and trade Iztures/Ronny C. for OF help. Makes no sense to me at all...........

I like the .360+ career OBP for the 2-hole, but he's missed a lot of games in his career. I haven't really followed him, but if he's a 35-year-old with an injury history, I can understand not wanting to count on him as a starting 2nd basemen/#2 hitter (not that I want DeRosa in either of those spots, either).

Besides, we already have an inexpensive option that would be perfect for the #2 spot (Murton).

I don't think he's missed a lot of games. He was brought up as a part time player who impressed with each opportunity he was given. He forced teams to play everyday with his production.

I've watched Loretta play a lot, and he's about as fundamentally sound as gets. And the OBP is pretty solid as well.

Therefore, he doesn't fit the profile to be a Cub.

Again, I have no personal knowledge of this, but according to ESPN he played only 105 games in '05, 107 in '02, 102 in '01, 91 in '00. Maybe that's all due to being considered a part time player, but he's missed a lot of games for one reason or another. He's got a solid OBP.

But he's also 35 and likely to decline. I would have rather thrown Theriot out there playing 2nd and hitting 2nd, but JH has never really taken my advice, surprisingly.

In 2005, he had a broken something or another and did legitimately miss time. In '02 and prior to '02, he had not been given a regular job. San Diego gave him his first real chance to be a regular.

What about his days with the Brewers?

Was he part of the Cowboy Up thing while he was in Boston?

Wow. I didn't realize he got that much playing time in Milwaukee (97-99). I change my original comment to San Diego gave him his first real chance to be a regular again.

Nope, Todd Walker was still in Boston.

Doesn't Eckstein have that title trademarked?

No, Eckstein's got "scrappy" trademarked.

What is a gamer?

It's a somewhat limited skills white guy that somehow plays a lot anyway. It helps if he's puts up reasonable production in some facet of the game. If he's ever played with visible blood, his reputation is sealed.

My 8 year old son plays a lot of Lego Star Wars 2 on the ps2 - I consider him a "gamer"??

Why would we not want Loretta?? My guess is that we have come to the conclusion that trying to corner the market on average to below average middle infielders as a strategy to win the World Series has some serious flaws
