''He's very exciting,'' Ward said of Soriano, adding that the slugger might stir memories of another Cubs Dominican star, Sammy Sosa. ''He's real loud in the clubhouse. He's real fast and has power -- there's no telling how many homers he might hit in Chicago -- and I'm pretty sure he likes to play his music loud.''

Hmm........... :-k

That's pretty awesome, right?

How is Soriano's english?

I've never heard him speak.

Also, I was reviewing his stats page and thought it was really strange how few triples Alfonso hits for such a "speed/power" guy.

Sammy speaks better English.

Hooray for unproven accusations!

You got the proof for that one?

actually, he was accused of beating his wife with a bat when she refused to grant him a divorce, but the charges were later dismissed.

Indeed, so we don't know what really happened.

It was his contract year. Wait til the Cubs flop midway thru his 8 year deal. Then we'll see how motivated he is.

i think Sosa and Soriano's English is the same.

By this logic, no player will try if he's financially secure and playing for a bad team.

No. I question Soriano's motivation because he performed way above his career norms in a contract year. A player who has been a steady performer from year to year is a different case.

OPS+:

2002 - 131

2003 - 128

2006 - 132

So what were his motivations in 2002 and 2003?

I don't know, but it's pretty lame that we're discussing a newly minted $136M player and we have to ignore his 2004 and 2005 numbers to make him look good.

It's also pretty lame that you're arguing that he was only motivated in 2006 because it was his free agent year, when he's had two other seasons just about as good.

Okay, maybe it wasn't a motivational problem. Maybe he's just a player who's subject to the occasional 2-year slump. Either way I wouldn't give him $136M.
