I just tuned into to WGN, caught the tail end of a Rothschild conversation/interview . . . apparently Maddux gave Rothschild kudos as being the best PC that he's played under, this last year before the trade - and someone mentioned inquiring about Rothschild's abilities at one of the GM meetings, and everyone said that he's tops. I'm more inclined to believe Maddux, given that he's played under the hailed great Leo Mazzone as well.

Just thought I'd share . . .

What do Maddux know? He was probably just saying those things to be nice. Why should we listen to him?

I'm sure all the amateur evaluators will set him straight and tell him how worthless Larry is.

Well, I believe it was Bruce Miles who mentioned that Dusty supposedly ignored or overruled a lot of Rothschild's input and suggestion. I'm not saying he's totally off the hook with what's happened to this club pitching-wise since he showed up, but there is that talk plus a number of guys on the team going out of their way to talk him up. Didn't Hill credit him in a big way with helping him turn it around last season?

Yes, it was Bruce who said that. Rothschild wasn't Dusty's boy in the first place; Dick Pole was. Rothschild was forced on Dusty because he was already here with a multi-year contract. My suspicion is that Rothschild was pitching coach in name, but Dusty listened to Pole. I'm willing to give Larry a little benefit of the doubt and give him a chance to prove himself under Piniella.

As am I. I trust what Bruce says, so now LR will get a great chance under his good Friend Piniella who he's worked with in the past. To prove if he is really good.

Right. If the pitching staff struggles again in 2007, then it may be time to cut Larry loose. But I think he deserves one year to show what happens with a manager that actually listens to him.

I've given Larry the benefit of doubt while serving under Dusty. Larry was one of the most well-respected and sought after pitching coaches in the game when the Cubs got him.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't fully believe that Larry had much control over the staff while Dusty was in town. I think Larry is a lot better than we all think/expect him to be. This will be the telling year.

Revitionist historians here and elsewhere have forgotten the circumstances under which Larry and Dusty existed - Larry was forced down Dusty's throat. He wanted Dick from the begining. (oops, this is a family bd. )

In any case, lets allow Larry one season and see what happens. If the pitchers stink, we'll all pile on.

So Rothschild kept his mouth shut for three years while risking his reputation, career, and the health of his pitching staff? Personally, I find that far less believable than him having a significant role in it.

And I can't say I was too pleased with how he handed Hill.

Larry's going to get a chance to prove himself if we really have signed Marquis.

I think he has already proved himself, and his loyalty to the Cubs. I believe what Bruce Miles says. He is solid.
