update at 6:20 ET from ESPN at the winter meetings

While Ted Lilly (Cubs) and Vicente Padilla (Rangers) moved closer to signing multiyear contracts, indications are that Jeff Suppan might remain on the market until after the winter meetings. Suppan is believed to be seeking at least $10 million a year on a multiyear deal and continues to attract interest from St. Louis and several other clubs.

I think its 95 percent sure right now that Lily signs with us..

So Lilly's moving closer to signing even though his agent isn't there and so we haven't been talking?

There are cell phones and fax machines in the world. Lilly's agent doesn't have to be there to have contract negotiations close to completion.

What's the rush? It's only Monday. He's on his way there...

Something to take note is that in Rosenthals column from a little earlier today, he said the Yankees will meet with Lilly's agent, so there is still interest from there.

If the Yankees stole him from Hendry..Hendry would have a nervous breakdown...Im all for it if it means hell push harder to sign Schimt or trade for Jennings or Westbrook

Come on, use that money! Although if we use Lilly, Hendry will probably go after Meche ...

I'm not shocked by that at all-Suppan has been better than pretty much all of the second-tier pitchers on the market, and if he signs for the same amount as the rest of them he may end up being the biggest bargain of them all.

Suppan/Lilly Comparison

Actually if you compare the two, Suppan is pretty even with Lilly (if not better)...

Geez, now I know how Lilly had an ERA under 4 in 2002...look at his BABIP and LOB%. Very much out of line with the rest of his career. If Lilly can get 10 or 11M, Suppan definitely should too.

Im not sure about everyone else, but i would much rather sign Suppan than Lilly.. his HR/9 really scares me, especially at Wrigley.

That's it....All this talk about mediocre players getting raises, because of what they DID, instead of what they could do, is getting ridiculous. Tomorrow, I am going to walk in my boss' office, and DEMAND a raise. I mean if mediocre players who don't earn the raise can get a raise, I should too, right?

Right?

Oh god, somebody please till me if I am right?

[Zambrano, Schmidt, Hill, Prior, Miller, Guzman and one of Mateo, Marmol or Marshall is enough to get started.

personaly i believe that prior and wade miller should not be counted on for even 1 quality start for the entire season. i think its in our best interests to not pencil in either. so realistically we're looking at zambrano, hill, guzman, and one of mateo/marshall/marmol. guzman too has been injury prone. i think the only realistic locks for SP's we have are zambrano, hill, and one of mateo/marshall/marmol. that leaves us with 2 holes in the SP slots. if you add schmidt, zito, lilly, etc we're down the 1. but for the love of God do not count of mark prior or wade miller for any type of production and if one gives us something its an added bonus.

If the market for the services you're offering is as good this year as it is for MLB-proven talent, then yes, you're right :)
