Whitlock is reporting it as hearsay, this could well be reporter rumor-mongering, which seems to be rampant. I suppose Whitlock could have overhead something though if some Royals and Cubs people crossed paths in a Ryan Church discussion.

 

In any event, he's saying the numbers he's heard that the Cubs have **on the table** (his words) for Schmidt is 4/60, guaranteed all four years. No other info. FWIW.

Jason Whitlock was an extremely horrible reporter who used to write for Page 2 on ESPN.com. He's basically a fatter version of Scoop Jackson.

All I know about Jason Whitlock is that he once wrote a column where he called former Indiana basketball coach Mike Davis a "coaching genius." His credibility is kind of a non-starter for me.

Another "quality" reporter: Steve Phillips on SportsCenter just said the Cubs are trying to land Lilly and Meche this week.

I've never thought of Whitlock as a reporter, he's more of a rabble rousing columnist.
