Update from Jason Stark at the meetings:

• An official of one club that had talked with Colorado said there is "no way" that's going to happen. And another source said the Cubs are "not down any road on any trade with any team." An official of another club that has spoken with the Rockies about Jennings said there is just about a zero chance that Colorado will trade him before leaving the meetings. "I don't think a reasonable deal could be made on him right now," the official said. "They're certainly not in any panic to move him. They can sure afford him, so it's not like they're going to non-tender him or anything. In other words, there's no gun to their head to move him. So the price is really high."

In other words, this deal will happen in the next 24 hours.

;)

Or people think it's pretty easy to get Hendry to overpay if you just plant stories about something costing him a lot.

So now that this trade is squashed, and thank God it is because I didn't like it, if the Pirates were pretty much giving up one of their pitching prospects (Maholm, and I also read they were dangling Gorzelanny) for Brad Hawpe... welllll, why the hell were we not offering Veal or Gallagher for Hawpe? Don't get me wrong, I like 'em both, but if one of them could net us Hawpe the same way one of Gorzelanny or Maholm could've netted Hawpe, then we were making the wrong trade. We could've done that and then hocked Jones off somewhere else for pitching.

Granted, it would've never happened, but I just didn't like how the deal was structured, it could've been much more beneficial to the Cubs. In market exploding with money where relievers, back end rotation, and bench players are getting paid what Jacque Jones is making as a starting RF who can produce (only they're getting paid more), the market for Jacque Jones should be able to net us a lot more then just Jason Jennings if he's packaged in a deal properly

I don't think he is either. I think Steve Phillips is a moron. The point I was trying to make (not sure if you were responding to my post) was that we were making the wrong deal if they were giving up Hawpe for so little in return

I'm not convinced Hawpe is available. I'm not even sure why he would be.

Because the Rockies need pitching and they have corner OFs all over the place. Jeff Baker lit the ball up in his short stint. Atkins may have to move to the OF shortly when Stewart comes up. The Rockies want a young CF and pitching to go along with Francis. If they can get that for Hawpe, they will trade him.

Jones+Marshall for Hawpe.

Hell, give them Mateo or Marmol too. Murton-Soriano-Hawpe. Mmmm.

Rockies have corner outfielders everywhere, so they resolve the problem by.... trading for one corner outfielder and getting one in return?

Then why would they want Jones if they have corner OFs who are ready? And if they need pitching why are they trying to deal Jennings?

They are dealing Jennings because he is a free agent after this year, and is a long shot to re-sign with Colorado and less of a shot to do so at an affordable price for them. I have never said they want Jones. The rumored deal was Jones, and it has not been accepted so it can be deduced that they don't want Jones.

He probably heard that rumor while he was doing body shots off of Littlefield.

ewww

Agree. Probably the most disturbing thing i've ever heard.

Why not work out a three way deal with Rockies and the D-rays. Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli are both available. Crawford is a lefty so he would be ideal. Baldelli maybe easier ot get however.

We know the D-rays want a veteran starting pitcher for either of them. So we trade Marmol and Jones to the Rockies, Cubs get Crawford/Baldelli, and the D-rays get Jennings.

Just wanted to put my thoughts down.

Tampa wants cheap front line starters. Not guys that are about to get expensive. They would have zero interest in Jennings.

I don't think Colorado is enamored with Jacque Jones. I believe Hendry is the one attempting to get them to be enamored with Jacque.

And since the Rockies are looking for a CF, why wouldn't they just make a straight up trade with the Rays for Baldelli?
