any news on pignatello or fontenot? with bynum gone maybe mike will ge t a shot as a utility guy next year.

Frankly, I expect the Cubs to trade Fontenot. They don't seem to think he can be a utility guy at all.

it would be a shame if they do trade him. he would provide many things they need as a utility guy including a left handed bat , very good obp and the ability to play 2b & 3b.

I'm disappointed Holdzkom was selected--though I expected it--but I'm very pleased that Carmen Pignatiello was not. I think Piggy could end up helping the big league Cubs sooner rather than later, he really had an excellent fall league performance. If Ohman gets dealt, Piggy will get to compete with Rapada for a roster spot in Arizona.

I missed a chance to see Hamilton play this summer. Seems to have recomitted himself to baseball. He played in just one game here in State College (on visiting Hudson Valley) but I couldn't go

Doing a favor for a gm that traded Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for a couple of bullpen arms could help us down the road eh?
Too bad we didn't do this favor BEFORE they traded Kearns. We probably could have gotten Kearns for Rusch and Novoa. :D

Why would the Cubs select Josh Hamilton in the rule 5 draft and then trade him for nothing more than freaking cash?? What are the Cubs going to do with 25,000 dollars more!!

Why didn't they work out a deal with Tampa Bay so they could keep anoffensive player who is very talent and still might have a chance.

1. you don't really know if the Cubs are only getting 25K for those rights from Cinci.

2. maybe Lou said he doesn't think the kid can turn it around. My positive feeling earlier was based on Lou having seen him in ST for a couple years in TB. Maybe he gave a negative scouting report.

Lou isn't the only one who's seen Hamilton up close in the organization...don't forget Tim Wilken. Both of them probably had some input.

Great point. I had forgotten that link. Wilken was probably even more familiar with the situation.

But I think the question is, why even help out the Reds and draft him? Just to establish some good faith?

Adam Dunn? (Yeah, right.)

Or Freel. =P~

If Hollandsworth were to come back, though, I'd ask the doctors to check for a blockage in Jimbo's brain this time. OTOH, a LH bat is sorely needed in the Cubs lineup. But I fear Lou would give Holly playing time over Murton every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

From AZPhil at The Cub Reporter:

If the Astros offer Lincoln Holdzkom back to the Cubs and the Cubs accept, the Cubs would have to place Holdzkomm on their 40-man roster, and then option him to the minors (Holdzkom has two minor league options available). If they try to send him outright to the minors, he has the option to declare himself a FA.

If the Blue Jays offer Jason Smith back to the Cubs and the Cubs accept, not only would the Cubs have to place Jason Smith on their 40-man roster, they would have to keep him on their 25-man regular season roster, too. That's because Smith has not only been previously outrighted in his career (so he cannot be outrighted without having the option to be a FA), but he is also out of minor league options.

This doesn't apply to Campusano.

It's really strange that the Blue Jays took Jason Smith when he was availble as a free agent about a month ago.

Teams do it all the time in the Rule 5. Seems like they didn't like anyone else in their slot and the Cubs didn't feel Hamilton could stick in the big leagues (or Lou and Wilken weren't fans) so they helped out the Reds.

They probably felt that there could be a situation in the future where the Reds could do a favor for the Cubs. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. As long as the Cubs weren't going to draft anybody for themselves, they had nothing to lose by doing it.

Drafted troubled outfielder Josh Hamilton from Tampa Bay in the Rule 5 draft and immediately sold him to Cincinnati for $50,000. Hamilton, a former No. 1 draft pick, had been suspended for alleged drug use.

Basically, that means the Cubs broke even. $50,000 was what they had to pay Tampa Bay, so they're just getting their money back from the Reds. Consistent with the idea that they were really drafting him for the Reds in the first place. I'm sure there's a gentlemen's agreement in place that, at some time in the future, the Reds would do something similar for the Cubs if the situations are reversed. Otherwise, it would make no sense for the Cubs to help out a division rival without getting anything in return.

This is no big deal. If the Reds want him, there is no problem in the Cubs helping them out.

It isn't like they gave Pujols to the Reds or anything.

This kid has played 15 minor league games this year, and missed the previous three seasons completely.

No way he sticks.

except hamilton might just have the best tools in the history of the rule five draft, santana and clemente included. the reds dont have the logjam in the OF and he had knee surgery - meaning he could be on the DL for some of the season while the Reds arent going anywhere.

Yeah, but being on the DL doesn't count towards his time spent on the major league roster for the purposes of the Rule V. They'd have to try and carry him on the roster next season too, and they might have a chance of competing then.

He didn't miss the two previous seasons. He's been playing in the independent league.

I don't know whether he sticks, but he's certianly has enough talent.

He claims he's completely healthy:

His season there ended early due to a left knee injury, and Hamilton said the knee feels fine, though he said the best indication was when he dragged a deer out of the woods after a successful recent hunt.

...

Hamilton, who spoke to reporters in a telephone interview, sounded eager for a change of scenery and an opportunity. "I'm not really concerned. Baseball has never been the problem . . . " he said. "I've been working out, and I can guarantee I will be in the best shape of my life when spring training comes."

No he didn't. This is from a USA Today artice on 6/7/2006

He hasn't played an organized game of baseball since July 10, 2002, when he hurt his shoulder and elbow and drifted into the drug scene to relieve the boredom from being sidelined.

why is Holdzkom different than other Rule 5 picks? teams don't usually have to roster drafted players after they are returned, do they?

No, teams don't usually have to.

Holdzkom and Smith were previously outrighted to the minors so they have the right to exercise an option to become a free agent if the Cubs outright them again.

I believe that would be true even if they weren't taken in the draft. Rules about outrighting players are independent of the Rule 5 draft.
