It's not much, but there is a blurb in the Toronto Star that implies the Cubs are pursuing Lilly.

Link.

The agent for Ted Lilly said last night that the Blue Jays were still going hard after the free-agent left-hander but so were the Yankees, the Cubs and two other teams, one from each league.

It appears that according to Lilly's agent, he wants a contract similar to what Washburn recieved last offseason.

"I told them Eaton might have set the market for Adam Eaton but Ted Lilly, as I've said along, fits right there with the contract Jarrod Washburn got last year (four years and $37 million)."

i see us eventually trading whatever 2nd tier SP we pick up, with hopefully some of our young arms being in the bigs in 2008 or 2009. so i hope the contract isnt too backloaded to make it easily moved then.

Man seems like Lilly gives up a lot of dingers though. 28 last year in only 181 innings.

Compare that to Jake Westbrook, who only gave up 15 in 211 innings.

Even Meche, who I think is pretty marginal, gave up 24 in 186.

I like Lilly, I think he could be a solid pitcher in the NL. He's been the one "second tier" guy I've wanted all along. I would love to land him and Schmidt, and could even be content with him and Westbrook added to this rotation. Edited by Butterscup

He was going up against some pretty good lineups out east. Westrbook did to in the central, but pitching in the AL east will lead to a lot of homers given up.

Factor in the fact he'd be coming into the NL with a lot less homers, and without a DH as well.

They're diff. type of pitchers as well. Sinker ball pitcher vs. a LH'ers who uses the high FB for strikeouts and to change the eyesight of a hitter when setting up his out pitch (curve) and his token change-up to RH'ers.

Not if he plays his home games at Wrigley Field.

Lilly was my first choice after Zito and Schmidt and I'm not so sure about Schmidt either due to his age concerns. I know 9 mil sounds a lot for Lilly but we need pitching and it won't come cheap if we need to make a run for the WS. Sign Lilly and trade for Westbrook please.

If I had a choice between two middle of the pack starters, I'd take Padilla over Lilly.

Padilla and Westbrook would likely create one of the better rotations in the NL. If Hill shows the same glimpses as last year as well as Prior showing somewhat of his '03 form, it could be the best.

I'm with you. Padilla is the one starter of the FA's left that I have the most interest in.

I won't complain if we get Padilla and Westbrook either.

I thought Wrigley was rated as a somewhat neutral ballpark? Yes, I know the power alleys are shallow, but the wind blows in just as much as it blows out.

Of course the one advantage Lilly has over the others is that he's a lefty. GMs think a mediocre lefty is better than a mediocre righty.

Looks like this Toronto guy thinks it's a done deal. It's on page 27:

To those that didn't want to load the PDF...

It looks as though the Blue Jays will not be able to resign starting pitcher Ted Lilly.

Sources have told Metro that the free-agent left-hander is on the verge of agreeing to a four-year deal worth $37.5-million US with the Chicago

Cubs. Baseball owners have lost their minds.

Their 3-year splits are virtually identical, but Lilly has faced 3 straight years of the Red Sox and Yankees, with an astounding 26 starts against those two teams (out of 89 total starts in 3 years, 29%), while Padilla never faced any given team more than 6 times for his 80 starts over 3 years.

I just feel like Lilly has been through the grinder more than Padilla and has a slight advantage in 3-year splits for core numbers and durability.

If that's true, that contract sucks.

$9.375MM/yr...... yeah, that's malarky. If that is true, and the Cubs are actually trying to get Schmidt, they're dooming themselves by driving up his price on their own by giving Lilly a contract like this.
