Benito Santiago-C-Mets Nov. 30 - 2:18 pm et

41-year-old Benito Santiago, who last played in the majors in May 2005, intends to attempt a comeback next season.

Santiago signed with the Mets after being released by the Pirates in May 2005, but he didn't get called up and chose to head home in July. He announced his intentions to play in 2006 about a year ago this time, but he didn't follow through. He's currently hitting .250 through 14 games in the Puerto Rican League. "I think I can help anybody," he said. "I'm playing like I was five or six years ago. And if someone comes to see me in Puerto Rico, they'll see it, too." Beggars can't be choosers, but it sounds like Santiago would like to join the Phillies.

The best throwing arm for a catcher I have ever seen.

Posted
Just looked at his page on baseball-reference.com. I never realized that he had a few seasons where he had some problems with passed balls. He had 22 passed balls his first full season. In 1993, he had 23 passed balls. That's a helluva lot for a guy with a reputation as a good defensive catcher. Hell, it's a lot for a catcher who isn't known for his defense.

Well, in 1993 he was on FLA catching Charlie Hough, so that's probably a reason why that's bad. Not sure if there were any knuckleballers on his Padres team where he had the 22 passed balls

Good point about Hough, but still....23 passed balls? The White Sox catchers that caught Hough the year before combined for 13 for the whole season. As for the 1987 Padres, the starters who ate the bulk of the innings were Whitson, Show, Jimmy Jones, Hawkins, and Mark Grant, while McCullers tossed over 100 innings out of the pen.

Well, for what it's worth, Varitek's first full year catching he had to deal with Wakefield and gave up 25 passed balls. And before that the Red Sox catchers that had to deal with Wakefield struggled. In '98 35 total PB, '97 36 total PB, '96 23 total PB, and '95 29 total PB.

Perhaps it was first year jitters for Santiago catching a knuckleballer in '93 and first year jitters as a rookie. Regardless of all this (considering it's pretty much useless info), Santiago might make a nice backup somewhere, but is his arm out of steam? That's probably the only thing he's got going for him at this point I would assume, is his defense.

I wouldn't blame it on first year jitters. Benny had a bad habit of just reach his glove out to get at balls, instead of moving his body to block it.
