http://www.mlb-rumors.blogspot.com/ (They're actually pretty reliable as far as I know)

According to the New York Post, the Yankees plan to package a deal for Dontrelle Willis. Although several Marlins officials said he is not on the market, a trade consisting of Melky Cabrera, Humberto Sanchez, and several other players may be able to do it. I doubt the Marlins will strike a deal, he is the best pitcher they have had in 15 years and he is still very young. Although he struggle this year going 12-12 with a 3.87 ERA. Career wise, he has gone 58-39, with a 3.44 ERA. Going to New York, would definitely turn him into the pitcher he was in 2005. With all the run production and above average defense, he would become the best number 2 starter in the game.

I think Pie would be worth it if we could package a deal around him.

The Yankees have been stocking up on RHPs lately. I know their pitching is suspect, but I'm convinced they have something brewing for this offseason.

Without Phillip Hughes on the trade table I cannot see any chance of landing Willis even if they include Duncan.

If the Marlins deal Willis to the Yankees, it will cost Philip Hughes.

I really don't see the point of doing that. Hughes may very well be better than Willis two years from now. Unlike most highly-touted New York prospects, he really is as good as advertised.

Oh I agree, but outside of Hughes I can't see the Yankees putting together a package that couldn't me topped by at least 6-8 other teams.

The thing is, whether those 6-8 other teams will be as willing to part with the players to make it happen.

Rangers? Yes

Angels? Maybe

Orioles? Maybe

Dodgers? Maybe

Mets? Yes

Astros? Maybe

If the Yankees are offering Sanchez and Melky, I think the Mets could offer Milledge and a pitching prospect to top that offer.

The Rangers likely could put together a package around one of DVD boys, and maybe throw in John Mayberry and others.

The Dodgers easily have the young players to get it done if they wanted to try.

The Astros could likely offer Pence and Hirsch to get it done.

I dont even know if it would take that long, Truffle.

yeah, I was being generous. Seriously, unless there were somebody like Miguel Cabrera or Johan Santana being offered up, the Yankees aren't dealing a guy who's probably the best pitching prospect in baseball. Especially for a good-but-not-great pitcher like Willis.

Well the Yankees could easily put together deals better than that, without including Hughes.

how many starters do the yankee's need? i would assume they didnt bid 25 mil to put iwaga in the pen. they have mussina, pavano, johnson, wang & hughes to go along with iwaga & willis? they must not think they are going to get too much out of pavano & johnson next year.

Hughes to the minors for 1 last year. I don't think they care too much about Pavano. Mussina, Willis, Wang, Johnson and Igawa could be an excellent rotation.

Sanchez was arguably Detroit's top pitching prospect and was fairly well-regarded save for his weight and injury issues. He's probably a small distance behind Hughes in the Yankees' system right now, but he's fairly valuable in his own right. He has terrific patience at the plate and developing power.

They'd have to sell their farm system in order to keep Hughes, but I could see them pulling off a trade for Willis.

They also have Jose Tabata shooting through the minors.

I'd go that route if I were the Marlins, since Hughes is likely not going to be traded for someone like Willis (and shouldn't be).

Agreed.

I'd rather have Hughes than Willis any day of the week.

For what it's worth, a Houston radio station is saying the Astros are in discussion for Willis and the deal centers around Willy Tevaras and Patton.

If I were the Marlins, I'd ask for Pence over Taveras.

I'd ask for just about anyone over Taveras. He's terrible.

No kidding. I think Willis is overrated, by Taveras is even worth the dirt on his cleets.

I still think that the best way for the Cubs to try and get ARod, if he's even remotely available, would be to try hard for Willis and then spin him off with a reliever and maybe Moore for Rodriguez. And even if ARod wasn't available, Willis could definitely net you a lot with his name from other teams. Worse comes to worse, the Cubs are "stuck" with him...not my favorite choice since I think he has some serious DL time in store for him, but hey, I'd live with it.
