I want absolutely no part of Suppan. Not necessarily because of his pitching, but because of his politics.

what are his politics? how do you even know what his politics are?

I don't get it either. I could care less if a guy has diametrically opposed views to me on each & every issue. You deliver a WS to this old Cub fan? You're a saint.

He and Kurt Warner were in political ads in St. Louis during the WS opposing the stem cell research proposition that was on the ballot. As a person with a science background, I found the ads offensive because they so blatantly distorted the small amount of truth what they were saying contained. Plus they're idiots for having their viewpoint, but that's just my opinion.

But, back on track, Suppan will be too expensive for what he's worth. Even though Weaver's agent is Boras, I think he'll try to sign a short term deal to get his price tag back up and then strike while the iron is hot after Duncan fixes him. No thanks to Mulder, we have enough of those already.

Watch it.

I've heard almost nothing about Mulder, Suppan and/or Weaver...is there anything brewing with any of them? (not Cubs specific, just generally)...(edit)..I guess you add Marquis to this list as well.

I wouldn't mind signing Suppan for a #2-3 guy...probably would stay away from the other two unless you could get Mulder very cheap and let him be your 2007 Wade Miller.

Gag!

I work closely with a number of people who have political views significantly different than mine. That doesn't preclude their right to have the job. You shouldn't discriminate in baseball any more than in any other job.

That's why I said it was just my opinion, which I and everyone else is entitled to. No offense intended, those ads just really pissed me off.

Alot of people were upset with Michael J. Fox for his ads, too. Let's say I'm a rebuplican who opposes stem cell research. I'm making a movie and it's having a lot of trouble getting any funding----no name actors, no real interest. Fox reads the script and says "I'll have a go at it." You can bet your bottom dollar I'm signing him up. ASAP.

Here's my opinion: not wanting a player because of his politics is stupid. To me this is self-evident.

I realize you have the right to an opinion. You're just walking the fine line between your opinion and something it is a blanket insult anyways.

If I said I thought all democrats were just closet homosexuals, but that's just my opinion (which it isn't)... it'd bring out some bad feelings.

I wasn't trying to impinge on your rights to free speech or anything... I was just giving you a head's up that the line was close to being offensive, even if it was just your opinion. I have no hard feelings.

This is from ten days ago on ESPN.com:

Nov 14 - Mark Mulder's agent, Greg Clifton, says his client has received inquires from 13 teams the Chicago Tribune reports. He is expected to open next season on the disabled list because of shoulder surgery but is being identified as a primary target for Tampa Bay.

The 29-year-old lefty also remains intrigued by the possibility of pitching for the Mets. New York pitching coach Rick Peterson was Mulder's pitching coach with the A's from 2000 until Peterson left to join the Mets before the 2004 season. During their time together, Mulder went 64-34.

Other clubs who have inquired about Mulder include the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Devil Rays and Orioles.

Hindered by an impingement in his shoulder, Mulder, 29, finished with a 6-7 record and a 7.14 ERA in 2006. He had surgery on Sept. 12 to repair a partial tear in his rotator cuff. He is not expected to be ready before Opening Day in 2007.

I'm not saying he doesn't have the right to have the job, just that I don't want him on the team that I love. I could not in good conscience root for someone like that.

There are reasons not to want Suppan, but basing that on his political views....ridiculous!

What if he beleived in comminism and murdering people? :?

As long as he's not actually murdering anyone, he can believe in it all he wants.

I don't want Jeff Suppan, not because of political views, or his personal likes or dislikes, I don't want Suppan because he is about to get a VERY, very ugly contract. He is about to be paid #2 money, when in reality he is a #4. That is why I don't want Suppan.

I hope the Cards re-sign all their FA's - overpay and live to regret it. By like others say in the post, "this is just my opinion".

If all "#4" pitchers are getting "#2" money is it really "#2" money anymore? The whole cost curve has shifted.

That's what I was thinking. If Padilla, Lilly, Meche are asking for 8-10 million, then how much more is Suppan really going to get? He's consistently a little better than those pitchers, and if he only gets 1-2 million more he could end up being the bargain of the pitcher signings.

Believing in murdering people isn't really politics though. Belief in communism? I wouldn't stop a good player from playing on my team because of that. I'd tell him he's misguided.....but then I'd give him the ball and ask him to win that big game for me
