because zito walks more and strikes out less than the others.

and another issue with zito is that like 15% of his flyballs are of the infield variety - something I would bet his home park has a large effect on.

I wonder if Hendry is going to try and pull off a trade for Dontrelle Willis. That would be nice.

Concerning Zito, is he a flyball pitcher? What is the reason (besides the incredible rumor of what he is asking) Schmidt is so preferred over Zito? Zito's numbers look a bit better to me.

Can you imagine Zito when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley...

Ugly, ugly stuff.

KCtigers, what were Schmidts GB, LD, and FB percentages the last year if you don't mind looking it up for us...

GB - 37.4

LD - 19.3

FB - 43.3

Career-wise though Zito's (and Lilly's too) GB, LD, and FB percentages are very comparable to Schmidt. Why does everyone want to bring in Schmidt over Zito?

Schmidt's GB, LD, and FB percentages from 2002-06 are:

GB - 38.6

LD - 20.2

FB - 41.3

Zito's from 02-06 are:

GB - 38.0

LD - 19.0

FB - 43.0

Lilly's from 02-06 are:

GB - 35.4

LD - 21.5

FB - 43.1

So why are people so anti-Zito here? Besides the risk of an arm injury, which is possible for any pitcher, I don't really get it.

How are Zito and Lilly's FB% trending in those 4 years?

i guess i see your point there

2002: 19.8% - 34.5% - 45.7%

2003: 18.5% - 39.3% - 42.2%

2004: 18.8% - 37.0% - 44.2%

2005: 21.7% - 40.9% - 37.4%

2006: 16.5% - 38.2% - 45.3%

Lilly's LD%-GB%-FB%

2002: 18.0% - 33.9% - 48.1%

2003: 27.7% - 33.3% - 38.9%

2004: 18.9% - 35.1% - 46.0%

2005: 22.1% - 36.7% - 41.2%

2006: 19.3% - 37.7% - 42.9%

Todays Rumor..On SFgate.com

All has been quiet on Jason Schmidt's potential return to San Francisco, and this might be why: According to one source, the Cubs have offered Schmidt a three-year deal worth $44 million

Ohhh ya ,that put a smile on my face...Hope to God its true...If we sign Schimdt Its freakin party time

Come on, pull it off Jimbo.

Even with declining skills, Schmitty is exactly the kind of gritty vet we need in this rotation.

Combine this with the Westbrook rumor and the rotation could be getting pretty danged deep.

Z

Schmidt

Westbrook

Hill

Miller

Prior

Guzman

Marshall

Marmol

Mateo

et al (my personal favorite)

Oh babies.

3 years would be a really good length for a contract. Schmidt's elbow issues and being run into the ground by Alou make me concerned that Schmidt won't be a good pitcher at age 40. But a contract that runs through age 36 - that I'd be fine with.

3/44 for Schmidt seems like a relative bargain in this market. It's probably just a couple million more, per year, than what Suppan will get.

Per Rotoworld via FoxSports.com:

The bidding for Jason Schmidt has soared past $11 million per season for three or four years, said an executive from a team with interest in the pitcher.

Of course it has. Schmidt's deal won't be as long as Barry Zito's, but there's no reason he should settle for less than $14 million-$15 million per year in this market. $60 million for four years or $70 million for five years are our guesses. The Mariners, Dodgers, Yankees and Cubs are thought to be among the favorties.

If this is the final price, then walk - no, run - away.

Yeesh, 5 years seems like a lot. He's what 34? Do you really want to be paying a 39 year old $15 million a year?

I guess we aren't really thinking about 5 years from now...just win me a world series.

This team is going to be in a bind 5 years from now anyway. Schmidt or no Schmidt.

Just because of Soriano and ARam (and hopefully Zambrano)? I doubt it. But regardless, I don't want to guarantee than Schmidt will be on this team when he's 39 years old. His pitching arm might not even be attached by then.

Don't forget Cotts is hoping for a chance to earn a spot in the rotation too...

This is not a bad thing, Marshall, Marmol, Guzman and Mateo could use more seasoning in AAA anyways.

With such a collection, a decent fifth starter should emerge from:

Miller

Prior

Guzman

Marshall

Marmol

Mateo

By the way, should Prior be on the above list, is there realistic chance he's going to start 20+ in 2007?

True. I like the 3/44 rumors much better than those pesky 5/70 ones.

This sounds like a very fair deal to me. I think it is something that Schmidt would take. He is a very solid number two who would fit perfect behind big Z.
