Angels ink Speier to deal

Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com

Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields and now Justin Speier. The Angels, adding to one of the game's top bullpens, have signed Speier to a four-year, $18 million free-agent contract, FOXSports.com has learned.

The length of the contract, first reported by ESPN.com, is a surprise, considering that Speier, a right-hander, recently turned 33.

The Red Sox, Orioles, Indians and Giants were among the teams that had been interested in Speier, who was perhaps the top reliever on the free-agent market.

Justin Speier was a one-time Cubs relief prospect, they gave up on him in a trade, but I don't remember which one. Does anyone recall the specifics?

July 31, 1998: Traded by the Chicago Cubs with Todd Noel (minors) and Kevin Orie to the Florida Marlins for Felix Heredia and Steve Hoff (minors).

Ugh, how could I forget the infamous Felix Heredia? Now THAT was a lousy reliever.

Poor Kevin Orie.....

I remember being angry about that trade at the time...and I was only 11.

There will always be a market for relievers as long as Wayne Krivsky has a job.

I can't imagine that will be much longer.

poor angels fans must hate the cubs. the cubs stole two of their targets and now they're forced to fork over all their money to mediocre relievers.

Lets get them to overpay for Z! (am I the only one who is worried that he will have these continuous back problems before not too long?)

Santana, Adenhart, Wood, Kendrick, and Mathis :D
