This is practically my ideal situation. I'd also like to see Izturis and Dempster traded for anything. Lugo possibly signed for SS too, if there's money left. I like Theriot, but I just don't see him continuing his success.

Yeah, I dont think Theriot will continue to have numbers like this year, but I think he could definitely be a .270/.340 hitter. And with that lineup we could easily get away with that from the 8 spot. But getting rid of Izturis and signing Lugo would be better if we have the money. My lineup was already pretty unrealistic so I decided not to add Lugo to it.

I don't think its too unrealistic money-wise. I think we can definitely fit it in if were able to trade Izturis, JJ, and Dempster without paying any of their contracts. I agree though. I doubt we get Soriano and Drew. That would be insane though.

I want them to sign Marquis for one reason:

It gives us a chance to stick it to those dirt bags in St Louis that won the Series with the crappiest pitching in the history of the World.

If...and only if...it costs us a fair amount of money. Marquis winning 15 at the back of the rotation would give me at least a little sense of payback.

Marquis recently worked out for Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who liked what he saw.

“He’s healthy, that’s the biggest thing,” Rothschild said Wednesday. “It’s just a matter of what we can do (as an organization) and where everything fits together.”

I'm, uh, not seeing the problem with Marquis. Yes, he sucked the past two seasons. But his '04 and '05 are perfectly acceptable at the back of our rotation. If he's figured things out, give him a chance to prove it.

Who better to mathmatically eliminate the Cardinals from the post season than one of their (former) own.

Then give me two of Igawa, Lilly, and Padilla, and we'll be in better shape.

Honestly, I'm more concerned with what contract he will get. If it's low, okay, it's not a bad gamble. It just seems guys that sign early in the FA process, don't sign for low dollars.

I would honestly rather lose my left nut than watch Marquis desecrate a Cubs uniform next season.

pics plz

you think thats really necessary?

Maybe they do when they get a call from Uncle Lou saying "yeah, i've got about ten more people to talk too, hurry up and decide if you want to go to the World Series this year or not..." :D

I would agree with that, but the fact that the Cubs are considering him their third acquisition and their "bonus" starter seems to indicate that the contract would not be astronomical.

The fact that Hendry's list does not include Zito or Schmidt does not bode well.

I want no part of Zito. He's good but nowhere near as good as he's made out to be, and he's going to be paid as the guy he's made out to be, not the guy he is.

Wouldn't mind Schmidt at all, but it could be the Cubs are scared off by his age and injury history, which you can't really blame them for. Plus, it seems like he's limited his options to the west coast.

Wish there was a better free agent class out there in terms of pitchers, but it is what it is. Hopefully, Prior can make some sort of contribution, and Hendry can pick someone up via trade. In terms of free agents, the names discussed don't excite me too much, but hopefully Z and Hill can perform well enough at the top and these guys can round out the rest of the rotation.

I like your proposal a lot, but how about this:

Murton - LF

Drew - CF

Lee - 1B

Ramirez - 3B

Soriano - 2B

Barrett - C

Derosa/Jones - RF

Theriot - SS

Since we're already saddled with Derosa, we might as well put him in the closest situation to success as possible...the right hand side of a platoon.

My concern is that Rothschild really knows what to look for when he watches someone pitch.

Considering the Cubs pitching staff walked 687 guys last year under his watch, what exactly did Rothschild see that he liked? A guy who was throwing everywhere except the strike zone?

I'd rather see them go get Westbrook or Jennings and sign Igawa and make a huge splash with bats.

Zambrano

Westbrook

Hill

Miller/Prior/Marshall/Guzman

Igawa

Soriano

Murton

Lee

Drew

Ramirez

Barrett

DeRosa

Theriot/ anyone not named Izturis

if the cubs do sign soriano, from everything i've read it's almost a lock that they will want him to play cf and not 2b.

So much for the "Hendry is doing well" theory.

That took a cozy 3 days. Back to the old Jim. Marquis will get 5/50.

I was going to wait until somebody started a thread about this....

This was posted on another board I frequent:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/471528p-396783c.html

...Now with DeRosa in the fold as an all-purpose insurance policy, Piniella and GM Jim Hendry are on the prowl for two starting pitchers, two power-hitting outfielders and a second baseman.

Anyone notice this? I like the idea that maybe Derosa wasn't given the starting base job, but is a backup plan in case improvements can't be made.

Jason Marquis is a guy I have wanted for a while now. I think he got himself in the mindset of trying to throw a fastball by everyone. I am pretty confident that he can turn his career around with the Cubs. Sign me up for Marquis.

While I somewhat agree he's got a decent chance to turn his career around, I'm wondering how many more question marks we can carry around on the 40 man roster. He'd have to be willing to sign a minor league deal and spend time in AAA if he doesn't win a job, possibly out of the pen.

The 40 man roster management is the biggest thing right now. That being the case, if this is done, I'd like to hold off. After the Rule 5, after we've had the chance to make some trades, etc.

Posted

No need to hold off, the contract can be done so that he has to be added to the 40 man before spring training or some date in the future, ala Miller.

One year deal with a mutual option for a second year at the same price. 2/5 or so.

If lady luck finally looks our way, we could have a solid #3 for a bargain. If not, it isn't that much wasted.

Much better than past projects. Dempster was a question mark even when healthy. Williamson was good in the past but no sure thing. Miller has a big injury question mark. Marquis seems more a mental issue than anything else.

Reunite him with his buddy we just signed, maybe he keeps his brain working for a few years. :D
