In case none of you have the fax number to Jim Hendry’s office, I’ll give it to you. It is: 1 (773) 404-4111. Go ahead and fax Jimmy all of your trade requests, God knows he needs the help. And while I’m on this thing about contacting Cub employees or personnel, you may already know that you can call the Cubs at (773) 404-2827 and ask for anybody you want. What happens first, is you will hear a menu given, but just remain on the line and an Operator will come on, and then at that time—just tell her who you want to speak to…Jim Hendry, John McDonough, Dennis Fitzsimmons, Billy Williams (my hero!), whoever it is, they’ll connect you to their office or leave that person a message that you called (this is what I did with Dusty Baker, and he called me back!). Oh one other thing, and you are probably already aware of this, but you can send a letter to your favorite Cub ballplayer, or other members of the Cub organization, by writing to: (Billy Williams c/o) Chicago National League Ball Club Wrigley Field 1060 W. Addison Street Chicago, IL. 60613. So when you write your favorite player in care of this address, they in turn, will forward your letter to where it needs to go…so go ahead and write Aramis Ramirez and Kerry Wood and thank them for resigning with the team, (they will get your letter)! Or write “Sweet Lou” with all your suggestions, on the type of players the Cubs need to get, in order to contend. Anyway, that’s enough for now. Hope this was helpful. Enjoy!

I just sent the following to Hendry. Flame away.....

Dear Mr. Hendry,

As a faithful and hopeful Cub fan buried in the heart of Cardinals country, I would like to offer up what I think would be the solution to the Cubs terrible record last year. My suggestions are as follows:

1. Sign JD Drew. Yes, I know he has had injury problems in the past and may not always seem to be playing the game as hard as he can, but these are numbers you can’t ignore: .286 avg./.393 obp/.512 slg/.905 ops. He can also play CF, which happens to be a need right now. Please go get him, yesterday if possible.

2. Rumor has it the Cubs are pursuing Cliff Lee or Jake Westbrook. Please get Westbrook. He’s better (by better I mean he walks less people and doesn’t give up as many HRs).

3. Sign Jason Schmidt. He may be expensive, but won’t be paid any more than he’s worth in comparison to the contract you just gave Blanco. Give big Z a little help out there. Please.

4. Send Cesar Izturis somewhere for a minor league position player with some potential and sign Julio Lugo to take his place.

If you can do these things, you will have this lineup:

Lugo SS

Murton LF

Lee 1B

Drew CF

Ramirez 3B

Jones RF

Barrett C

DeRosa 2B

And a rotation of:

Zambrano

Schmidt

Hill

Westbrook

Miller, Prior, Marshall or whatever other young guy might be healthy and effective.

By my calculations, you have around $30 million left to spend if the budget will truly be $115 million. Drew at 4 yrs/$52-60 M, Schmidt at 3 yrs/$36-42 M, and Lugo at 3 yrs/ $24-30 M. You save ~ $4.5 M by getting rid of Izturis for a net of somewhere between $28.5-35.5 M per year. Possibly a little over budget, but if you can win, I don’t think anybody will notice.

Thanks for you attention,

Schmidt and Drew are both type A, and I think Lugo is B. We can only sign two of those three. I still like the idea, but it is no longer possible.

I very much doubt we get Schmidt, so it'd be interesting to see who else we could get in trade pitching-wise.

I'm not sure there is anything that could be flamed in this letter. But, you should have finished it up with something like this:

We assure you that these offseason acquisitions along with retaining Wade Miller, Kerry Wood and Aramis Ramirez will assure you retain your job as General Manager of the Cubs for many years to come.

Thanks from all us at NSBB.com

I have the number to the clubhouse, but I don't think it'd be appropriate to post on here. Too many guys would be calling mid game to ask for a relief pitcher, etc.

LOL. That reminds me of Jay Johnstone's book. He talked about how Moe Drabowsky used to call the other teams bullpens and disguise his voice to sound like the opposing pitching coach and he'd say "Get Jones up" or whatever.

Moe also used to make calls from the Kansas City bullpen, which for some reason was a live phone. He would call Hong Kong and order Chinese food from the KC visitors' bullpen. Funny funny stuff.

You would probably need to explain that OBP is a good thing. The higher the better.

Seems they are confusing it with ERA, where the higher it is, the worse it is.
