* Remember that if Ramirez signed post-exclusive negotiations window, that's one less Type A FA we can sign.

I'd venture to guess that it was within the window, but was only reported this afternoon.

I would like one of:

Iwamura

Soriano

Durham

Loretta

Giles

Lugo

Belliard

at 2b in no particular order

JD Drew in CF

Matsuzaka or Schmidt at SP

I hope so too.

Does a posted Japanese player count as a FA signing?

1) Sign Zambrano to an extension. I don't want to have to go through this whole thing again next offseason. :(

2) Sign one of Matsuzaka, Zito, or Schmidt. This team needs another ace pitcher in a bad way; that much is obvious.

3) Go out and get a big bat. Alfonso Soriano is definitely attractive, but how about exploring potential trade options as well? We've all heard rumors about a number of hitters being available this offseason (Adam Dunn, Miguel Cabrera, A-Rod). The Cubs might not have the amunition to make some of these trades, but getting one of those guys would definitely help put this team over the top.

4) Sign one of Padilla, Lilly, or another comparable pitcher. This team also needs a somewhat reliable innings eater at the 3/4 slot. Having two open rotation spots at the 4 and 5 just won't cut it coming into next season. We do not know who can be relied on from the Prior/Marmol/Guzman/Marshall/Mateo/Ryu/etc group of pitchers. The odds of one of them becoming effective next season are very good. The odds of two or more...not as much so.

5) Go out and get a decent bat. Getting two big bats would be terrific, but that's rather unrealistic given the prior options. Guys such as Dave Roberts and Mark Loretta would be terrific options for guys who can supplement this offense and boost the team's OBP.

More to come later. :D

Are we even still in the race to get Daisuke? I thought he was all but certain to be a red sock.

No one really knows, in all truth.

My guess is they did, but I'm guessing there are all sorts of shenanigans (tampering, negotiating in bad faith) going on.

Drew, Durham, Schmidt, and maybe another starter

Quoting myself since too many posts past to edit...

Since Wood is back and likely in the pen, what about a Jones+Dempster for Hudson deal? Atlanta gets rid of any '09 obligation, as well as at least 10 million total salary, plus a serviceable OF and a bullpen project like they've taken on before(Sosa, Reitsma, etc). A Zambrano, Schmidt, Hudson, Hill, Prior/Miller/youngster rotation would be fun.

Any chance you can swing that into a Jones, Dempster, and Pie for Jones and Hudson type deal?

Posted

1. JD Drew - CF

2. Assuming Daisuke isn't going to be a Cub, Jason Schmidt.

3. Ray Durham or Akinori Iwamura - 2B

4. Maybe a bottom of the rotation starter if he comes cheap (Kei Igawa?).

Explore Miguel Cabrerra trade possibilities (don't think the Cubs have the assets for it).

Extend Z.

Even though Hudson is probably going to have a hip problem in the near future, I still think he has value as a starter.

That would kill us financially.

Me 2. Although im not as optimistic the Cubs will get Schmidt as i once was. I've reserved myself to them getting Zito, not a bad thing, just not what Id have wanted. Durham would be icing for me if they got the other 2. Ive always liked Drew, he has crazy talent.
