Edmonds gets two-year extension from Cardinals

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

11/10/2006

Jim Edmonds will be back with the Cardinals for two more seasons.

The World Series champions negotiated a two-year contract extension with their center fielder and now have him signed through the 2008 season.

Financial terms of the contract were not immediately known.

Edmonds had a $10 million option on the 2007 season, and the Cardinals had until Saturday to assume the option, exercise a $3 million buyout or negotiate an extension.

He is scheduled to have surgery on his right shoulder in the next few weeks.

Edmonds, 36, played sparingly the final six weeks of the regular season because of post-concussion syndrome and an injured left foot. But he played in all three playoff series and had a .371 on-base percentage and 10 RBIs in 52 at-bats.

just saw on SportsCenter - 2 years, $18-19M. I think this is a bad deal from the Cards' perspective. Of course I'm sure he'll turn back into a 160-170 OPS+ guy and it'll all work out fine for them as they win each of the next two World Series.

My thoughts exactly...although, seriously...talk about bidding against yourself...they had him locked up for next year at 10 and they "renegotiated" him to come back at 11? Is Hendry working for them now?

Not a bad deal. There was no way the Cards were gonna be able to play to replace Edmonds with a bat that was even his equal for the same money. Drew, Lee, and Soriano are likely out of their price range. Roberts, Pierre, and Matthews don't come close to replacing Edmonds production, nevermind the potential production. They were kinda in a Cubs situation with Aramis. Had no choice but to bring him back, even if they had to overpay, because there are no better options.

What's tying up all of their money? I don't get it.

Brand new park. World Series Championship. Went cheap last year and the year prior. I'm fine if they go cheap again this year, but I don't understand why.

I don't either, but that seems to be the way they go. I don't see any reason for them not to be a 100M payroll team.

Especially now. But, all I've heard from St. Louis so far this offseason is potentially retaining Belliard and letting Mulder and Suppan walk. I suppose they have replacements for both guys with Reyes and Wainwright. It just seems weird to me that they aren't being mentioned as suitors for some of the free agents out there.

might as well go cheap. Just sign guys who were good five years ago, or who never were good (Abraham Nunez, Tony Womack) and watch the results roll in!

You beat me to the punch. Why go high end when they continue to go reasonably cheap and win the division every year? Is it LaRussa, lousy competition, or a combination of both?

They do get lucky on players however this is partly due to the fact that they're willing a throw a bunch of players at a problem to see if something sticks. You guys mention a lot of their successes however they've also had their fair share of failures - Ponson, Bigbie and Spivey to name a few. In general, the Cards are willing to have uncertainty at a position going in to a season in order to see what pans out then trying to fix problems around the trade deadline rather than of wasting resources on a "proven" name.

The Cards payroll will be a little over 100m this year, I think. I expect them to make a run at Belliard, Mulder and Suppan

Edmonds is done. I'm surprised he can spell his own name anymore.

This deal may not hurt them so bad this upcoming season, but in 2008, he will be a nine million dollar bench player.

I don't even want to consider his defense in 08. His range is horrible now.
