A baseball source said Vicente Padilla is no longer using an agent and is attempting to negotiate his own contract.

Padilla has asked for a deal that would start at more than $10 million a year, a baseball official said. That is more than double the $4.4 million he earned last season.

In a related story all of the durgs in Venezuela have been used, by Vicente Padilla.

I bet he gets closer to it than we think. The dearth of quality on this market will result in a lot of over-paid players.

My guess is Padilla gets 3/27 or 4/35. That's not too far away from 10 million per season.

I think you're absolutely right. The market for a .500 pitcher with stuff is 7 million a year already.

well, might have to scratch him off my wish list.

I would. There's no way he's 9 million dollars better than Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, etc...Get Schmidt and rely on Prior, Miller, and the young guys to fill the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. Spend the rest of the money in the budget on resigning Ramirez, signing Drew, and getting one more bat (probably 2nd base). It's not ideal, but its better than paying Padilla 10 mil.

I don't see why no one looks at Hill as a "young guy". Sure he's produced more, but he's still no lock.

According to the Sun-Times, Padilla is high on the Cubs wish list.

At a minimum of 10 mill per, I almost wish he weren't...

Kinzer also confirmed he discussed free-agent pitcher Vicente Padilla with Hendry during their dinner meeting.

Padilla, 29, went 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA for the Texas Rangers last season. The right-hander is high on the Cubs' wish list.

Kinzer said Padilla likely will be seeking at least a four-year deal. After earning a career-high 15 victories last season, Padilla is expected to seek a minimum of $10 million annually.

I think Padilla is a fine option if you aren't signing an ace somewhere. But at $10m, that's a steep price, and makes him far less attractive.
