maybe the guys on xm homeplate got confused. During any other week the bids would have been due last thursday, with the acceptance coming today. But according to rotoworld the mlb offices closed for thanksgiving and reopened today which is why the bids were due today. Unless the team offering Igawa up has already agreed to accept the highest bid than we probably won't know until after thursday.

Not so bold prediction.

With the amount mediocre pitching is getting, matsuzaka got, and the pitching market in general.

This guy, Igawa. The winning posting bid will be $22-$30 mil. Just watch.

I will take the under. As will nearly everyone else.

Yeah me too, probably (betting wise). However, I would NOT be shocked if when the bid was announced, it was an amount over $20 mil.

do you guys want to bid 20 mil for Igawa?, even though it doesnt make a difference to the payroll.

That's a hard question. I haven't actually put any thought into if I'd be mad or not if the Cubs didn't win, if the bid was over $20 mil. No probably not upset. I would only be upset in that, at the end of the off-season, we have not added 2 more average-above average pitchers.

General pitching rumor updates: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-061127cubs,1,2546868.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines

"The Cubs seem willing to wait until next week's winter meetings to see where the market is headed." ... Ugh. I don't want to wait a week.

"It doesn't appear the Cubs will be signing Schmidt or Barry Zito, the big two in the free-agent market, before next week's meetings." ... Hey there's still a chance we get Schmidt!

"A second-tier Japanese pitcher, 27-year-old left-hander Kei Igawa, also is coming to the U.S., and the Cubs are believed to have put in a bid for his rights, although Hendry would only say Monday—the deadline for submitting proposals—that 'we are considering it.' Igawa is considered an end-of-the rotation starter or perhaps a long reliever. The Cubs just traded for a similar pitcher, the White Sox's Neal Cotts." ... Doesn't sound like Dave van Dyck is too high on Igawa ...

"Trades also are a possibility, although the Cubs have little to give in return, especially if outfield prospect Felix Pie is untouchable. The White Sox have Mark Buehrle or Freddy Garcia—in the last years of their contracts—available, but there seems to be no match in players returning." ... Great. So there are no good free agents besides Schmidt and Zito, Igawa is bad, and we have nobody to trade. Sounds fantastic.

Also ... http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1164535554291440.xml&coll=2&thispage=1

"Indians GM Mark Shapiro told the Plain Dealer he has no interest in trading Jake Westbrook for bullpen help. However, they are looking to acquire Scot Shields from Anaheim, and are also looking to sign Trot Nixon, who has been with the Red Sox. " This was a summary of the article on mlb-rumors.blogspot.com. I remember the GM said before that he wasn't trading Westbrook period. Now it's just not for bullpen help. Good news?

Awww....man, Boston isn't going to pony up $30 or so million dollars for Igawa? Crap.

I can't wait to see what happens when Boston gives up its right to negotiate with Matsuzaka. It's going to be a complete free for all.

Matsuzaka can't negotiate with any teams besides the Red Sox if he doesn't get something worked out... not until 08, at least.

(Disclaimer: it'd be possible for Seibu to post him again following 07, but very unlikely IMHO)

I think he's talking about the $ the Red Sox are going to throw at players if the deal falls through.

Before forming an opinion about whether we should sign Igawa, I was wondering whether you guys thought Westbrook/Jennings would be better than Igawa?

Jennings would definitely be. Westbrook may be (although it's close, I'm really not sure which one is better) but Igawa would be a better option than either of the other two because he can be signed rather than having to give up talent. Jennings is not coming to the Cubs unless they come down significantly with their demands for Hill, and Westbook is close enough to Igawa that it is not worth trading talent for him unless the deal was really good for the Cubs.

Are you implying that Jennings is better than Westbrook????

Fan Graph Comparions

Jennings is the pitching version of Mark DeRosa. His peripherals were not great this year and poor before. Hes never put up an ERA under 4.5. Westbrook has been significantly better than him.

People will argue about him having to pitch half his games in Coors. Not saying I'm one of those people, but that's the response I got when I asked why people wanted Jennings so much.

According to Rotoworld:

The Padres bid more than $10 million for the rights to Kei Igawa prior to Monday's deadline.

If the Padres sign Igawa, he'd replace Woody Williams in a rotation that also includes Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Clay Hensley.

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

I guess thats over?

I don't think it is saying they won the bidding, just what their reported bid is and what impact it would have on them if they are the winners.

I don't understand why they're waiting until Friday to make a decision. Just sort the bids in reverse numerical order, and whoever's on top, gets the rights to negotiate with him. It's not rocket science. I don't know what the hold up is.
