ESPN.com[/url]"] Minnesota Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano, still feeling pain in his elbow, has halted rehabilitation work and may be considering surgery.

Liriano left the team's facility in Fort Myers, Fla., and was to consult with doctors. He began working out there earlier this month, trying to get healthy enough to pitch in winter ball.

"Francisco continued to experience pain while taking part in a throwing session, and at this point, he felt it was necessary to re-evaluate his situation," Gene Mato, one of Liriano's agents, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "After conferring with the Twins and the different medical personnel that have evaluated him, he will determine whether or not he wants to have surgery in the next week or so."

He was diagnosed with a mild sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament, an injury team doctors had hoped would clear itself up through rest and rehabilitation.

That plan, however, does not appear to be coming together.

An MRI test and meetings with several specialists found no structural damage, but his soreness has persisted.

I always wonder if a guy like that could ever learn how to throw righthanded if he won't ever be able to throw left handed again.

Billy Wagner.

Gotta be Dusty's fault!

It does sound sort of like some of Wood and Prior's injuries over the years. It should be healing, but it's not. My best goes out to Liriano-I think one thing we forget about these guys is how frustrated some of them must be to get that taste of greatness, and then to have your body absolutely fail on you like these three great young pitchers (along with many others) have happened to them so far. It does tell you to enjoy the great times when they are there, because one will never know when they will be over.

Joking aside it really is a shame. It just shows you how fragile these guys are. If he does get TJ he's young enough to come back from it.

I was listening to Charlie Steiner's XM show a little while ago and he had a MN beat writer on as a guest (I tuned in part way through, so I missed his name).

Long story short, there are indeed questions being raised as to whether Liriano is a headcase and can't distinguish between REAL pain and NORMAL pain, at least according to this writer.

If that was my elbow, I'd be a little paranoid too. That's his meal ticket for life.

That bolded part sounds like a familiar lament.

I doubt it. It was partially torn.

He definitely should keep pitching with that (this is where the rolleyes would go).

When someone has a slider that nasty you almost have to wonder if its almost inevitable with the kind of torque required of the elbow to make the ball snap like that.

For some reason, I think the Twins are going to cope nicely with the likes of Matt Garca (A phenom in his own right) Bonser and perhaps Scott Baker. So, I don't think the Twins are going to miss a beat.
