Somehow USC didn't drop behind ND, and Cal jumped us (admittedly should have been ahead of us already). This is getting a tad out of hand.

I would put USC ahead of ND right now.

I wouldn't. USC lost to Oregon State for crying out loud. Not to mention that they were extremely close to losing to Washington State and Washington. USC was extremely overrated.

Lou Holtz still talking about Notre Dame.... isn't it past your bedtime Lou?

Can't believe I'm going to have to root for a Big East team in the national championship game.

Penn State should have never left their true roots then.

What could happen...well possibly happen is that Rutgers wins out. If this happens there is no doubt in my mind that the SEC or Big 12 winner would go to the BCS Championship. No way Rutgers can jump over all those teams.

Who cares if USC is ahead of ND by one lousy ranking. They will be playing each other at the end of the year anyway. It will be determined on the field. Rankings Schmankings.

And ND has done what exactly more than USC to deserve being ranked higher? Beat a choking MSU team?

And Notre Dame isn't?

Cubweiser is right, they'll decide it on the field.

They both are overrated, but USC has looked extremely unimpressive all year long. ND's loss came against a team that is ranked #2 in the nation while USC's loss came against a team that isn't worthy of being top 50 in the nation. That fact alone is why I believe ND should be ranked ahead of USC.

And USC killed Arkansas on the road.

That wasn't the same Arkansas team though. Different QB, and their star RB was hobbled. Even after the USC game, Arkansas struggled for a few games before gelling (2 point win over Vanderbilt in which Vandy had a field goal to win, and than a 1 point OT win against Alabama).

Edit: BTW, I don't care that USC is in front of ND. As others have said, the polls don't matter until the very end of the year, and it will be settled on the field before then.

My gripe is that Clemson fell 9 spots for losing to VT on the road. USC falls only 6 for losing to a vastly inferior (to VT) team on the road.

And Cal jumps ND without even playing (the 2nd week in a row that's happened). They are a better team, but how is that suddenly the case now as opposed to the week before? And what did ND show in a 24-point win over Navy that deserved dropping behind them?

The sheer ridiculousness of the polls sometimes baffles me.

Arkansas beat Auburn, and very easily as well. Both have only 1 loss, and both play in the same division in the same conference. One is #12 and one is #6.

I think we tend to look at these and think of them as one poll when they are a collection of many people. For a lot of people it takes two+ weeks to reaffirm what they believe to be true, and don't vote that way until so.

The computer rankings have ND at #5. Yet, the ridiculous polls continue to keep us down at the #10 range. I think the computer rankings have it about right:

1. Michigan

2. OSU

3. Cal

4. Florida

5. Notre Dame

6. USC

7. Auburn

8. Rutgers

9. Louisville

10. Tennessee

11. Boise State

12. Texas

(Copying this to the new week's thread in case most discussion has moved there!)
