Gary Matthews' agent has informed the Rangers he will test the market before signing. The Rangers had hoped to keep Matthews, and still will try, but they won't do it during the exclusive signing period.

Matthews can file for free agency after the World Series, and other clubs can start negotiating with him two weeks later. The Rangers recently extended a formal offer to Matthews, but it was declined. They had hoped to reach an agreement with Matthews before the free agency period because he is expected to be a hot commodity. The Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox – all deep-pocketed clubs – could be in the market for a center fielder.

What is the general consensus on Matthews?

My guess is that he will get a deal too expensive and too long for his skills. Other opinions?

I would agree with that assessment. He has a chance of being productive enough for his contract, but he's probably not going to outperform his contract, and there is a pretty good possibility he won't live up to his contract. It wouldn't be a very good risk IMO.

I feel about him essentially the same way I felt about Jacque Jones.

Yeah, he's an alright player. But he wont be worth the money or years he gets... and he's not the best thing on the market.

Gary Matthews should be the type of guy we try to sign to one or two year deal when every other avenue is exhausted before the season. There's better targets to set our eyes on.

Too inconsistent. Sure, 2006 Mathews would be nice, but he could just as easily be as bad as Pierre was this year. He'd be a decent 4th OF, but nothing more. Actually, he'd be a good platoon partner with Jacque Jones, as he's historically hit better against lefties. If you end up getting a stud infield, then it wouldn't be insane to go Murton, Pie, Jones in the OF with GMJ subbing in for Jones and insurance for Pie.

I just had major deja vu, did we have this conversation already?

My Guess woudl be that he woudl get Mike Cameron type money. They are pretty similar player, Matthews being a poor mans version of Cameron except for last year. So probably something like 3/21. Which is a bit high for him.

Mathews is nowhere near Cameron's class. They are coming off of similar seasons, but that was a career year for GMJ, by a wide margin. Gary typically puts up an OPS+ well below 100, while Cameron has been over 100 for 8 straight years. If he gets anything close to 3/21 that GM should be fired on the spot and the contract should be voided in the best interests of baseball.

Or, what about Soriano in CF and Durham at 2b. Now that's a real winner!

why soriano in CF? has he ever played there before?

I think he could play CF as well as he played left. From all indications he's brutal at second.

There are also more decent options at 2b than there are at CF.

Now if we could trade for Andruw Jones and sign Soriano for second, I'd be for that option as well.

i just don't like the idea of acquiring a guy to play a position that he's never played before. i think the idea sounds very weird.

Didn't he play CF when he was with the Yankees? I could be wrong, just thought I remembered him playing there some.

As per baseball-reference Soriano has never played CF in his major league career.

They wanted him to move there, he ended up in Texas before it could happen.

Ah well I guess I remembered them talking about moving him there. THanks for looking it up, I couldnt seem to find the games played per possition anywhere I looked.

I would love to see Matthews in CF. Especially if ARod could be had.

Theriot 2B

Murton LF

Lee 1B

ARod SS

Ram 3B

Jones RF

Barrett C

Matthews CF

I think that lineup would be pretty potent.

I don't think Matthews will be worth the money he is going to command and I think he'll have a drop off next year. Remember, he is 32 so he's not likely to improve anymore.

Matthews is one of those players that, if he wound up on the market still in mid February and suddenly will take a one year contract, you'd have to bring him in. But if he wants big money for multiple years, pass.

His three year OPS's, all in texas, are .811, .756, and .866. Just so happens the three year average is .811. Pie put up a .792 at Iowa this year. Is the difference worth the cost?

For a year it might be. :)

Oh, please. He had one good year and made one good catch and now you all want him. If any club gives him a long-term deal, they'll regret it. I'd much rather have Pierre or even Pie.

Uh, I'm 32 and I keep improving.

Drinking tolerances don't count.
