"I want 8 midgets taking walks every time."

Obviously sarcastic. Doesn't sound like an OBP guy at all...

Edit: But then he says that they are definitely going to try to work on walks. Hmm.

OBP

My philosophy is to get 8 midgets up there that walk all the time.

Today's hitters are aggressive. You want hitters to hit in hitter's counts.

Obviously if you swing at strikes, your chances are better.

I noticed they didn't walk all that much, but that's something we'll work at. You want these guys to swing at pitches within the strikezone.

"Last year they had to force-feed some players", but "player development is good"

I like Lou more now than I did before.

They will hustle, it wont be a problem. My players always hustle.

I hate this emoticon, but

He was asked about whether his players would hustle.

He seemed to think it was a silly question.

Whatever...

He also said:

He went on to say that it is important. Hitters need to hit in hitters counts. Being selective at the plate helps that.

Oh no...did NOT like his comments on OBP....kinda brushed off the teams woeful OBP as no big deal

I don't think he brushed it off entirely.

The biggest problem is they are last in the league in walks, and always are. I don't need them to lead the league in walks or OBP. I need them to be average. I think Piniella might be a guy who can help them get to average in that deparment.

I don't think so.

He said last year they didn't walk and they'll work on that but the big thing is being aggressive in the strike zone in hitter's counts. He's right.

There's a big difference between saying "be aggressive" and "be aggressive with good pitches in good counts."

Sounds pretty right on to me. I don't get all the complaining already.

"I don't like to sit and wait for the 3-run homer."

He's saying all of the right things right now.

That's not the right thing.

The whole, be aggressive thing is what killed the Cubs. 3-run homers are good, and they need more.

His first bad comment of the day in my opinion: "I like the National League, I like to force the issue."

Fortunately like Bruce has said, he apparently really adjusts to the talent he has and let his hitters mash a little more in the Kingdome.

At least he followed it up by talking about the most important thing for him to tell pitchers is the importance of throwing strikes and that he likes young pitchers and young players.

Oh. I guess I should listen to the presser for context. Thanks.

I redirect my rolled eyes at the questioner
