17:3 is the only stat there that matters to me.

Definately. If he really is getting movement on his pitches now, and cutting down on walks, then he might be poised for a rotation spot next year.

I really don't know how much stock to put in it though. He had an impressive K:BB in Iowa. At some point it will translate and it'll probably happen sooner than later and much sooner than Marquis would be able to pitch halfway decent...

I think its lost among the dismal numbers he's put up.

I am happy to see that Angel is pitching well.

A home run and a walk in the same game?!?
Posted

Cedeno is having a poor winter, and there has been long-standing rips about his lack of plate discpline, etc..

But he's got 15 walks in 143 AB this winter, nothing wrong with that. And IIRC, that's something of an adjustment, since early on he had hardly any. He had only 1 walk during his first 50 AB. So over the last 93 or less, he's taken 14 walks.

If walking is the ultimate in offense and the portent of all good things to a hitter, perhaps Cedeno is undergoing a change of heart. Of course, if walking is the ultimate in offense and the portent of all good things for a hitter, that has yet to manifest itself over those 93 AB, since his hitting and slugging hasn't been all that super over those 93 AB. His OBP, slugging, and OPS has changed hardly at all since he converted from 1walk/50 AB to 14walk/93 AB.

Still, small steps in the right direction can sometimes pay off later.

Or, it could be meaningless and reflect no change in approach or pitch recognition or plate strategy.

I haven't given up on Ronny yet. I'm also glad to see him keeping the errors at a more reasonable level. That's about a pace of 16 for a full season, which is decent. Given his other tools at the position are above average, that would make him a plus defender if he can keep the errors to an average rate.

Guzman's line gives me great hope there - that 21/4 K/BB ratio is pretty shiny. I really want him to turn it on this year, and I think he can.
