Zimmer...."Welcome to the club", that guys a nut.

One thing I find ironic is if Florida has always been worried about their pitchers why did they have McKeon as manager? Didn't he run the young guys into the ground or have they learned from that?

I predict that Florida will win another WS in the next 5 years.

Joe said on WGN Radio last night that no one has contacted him yet, but this article makes it sound like Jim had him on the phone in the afternoon.

Yep. I heard that too. He said the Cubs have not contacted him yet...

Jim Torborg was the one running the young guys into the ground (specifically AJ Burnett).

From reading the Daily Herald and Sun-Times, it doesn't appear as though the Cubs have contacted Girardi yet, just that Hendry is saying he's a strong candidate.

Some stuff about how long it might take to get Girardi:

Sun-Times[/url]"]''Joe will be a candidate,'' general manager Jim Hendry confirmed Tuesday night from his Wrigley Field office after a day filled with high-level meetings. ''And I am sure he will want to be a candidate.''

...

The Cubs have set no timetable for an interview with Girardi, who turns 42 on Oct. 14, and still are adding names to their wish list, though they are working to fill the job before mid-November. Girardi's Chicago-based agent, Steve Mandel, said he was contacted by a couple of interested teams but didn't think his client would get serious about any discussions until later this week or early next week.

''Today, Joe just wanted to take his time to be with his family,'' Mandel said. ''We've had a couple of conversations, but nothing as far as any concrete discussions.''

“We’re going to take the next couple of days, let everything sink in and evaluate all the options for Joe,” said Steve Mandell, Girardi’s agent. “He wants to relax and evaluate things of interest.”

Maybe the Cubs contacted his agent. He did seem pretty believable last night when he said he hadn't talked to the Cubs yet.

Well, WGN contacted Joe, maybe the Trib guys just got confused, after all the turnover, about who exactly is representing the Cubs now.

I don't like the idea of a mid-Novemeber timetable. I'd hope the Cubs would have a manager hired before the end of the World Series.

For all the talk yesterday of John McD "flip-flopping" on his comments, what I don't like is all the supposed deadlines or timetables we've heard already and it's only been a little less than 48 hours.

I've heard/read:

Within October

End of October

By Nov 6th (organizational meetings)

Mid-November

Mid-November would be pathetic. As I said in another thread, as a sitting GM who is looking to replace a lame duck manager whom he previously hired, and following several months of knowing he was likely going to need to replace the guy, and hopefully at least several weeks of knowing he was going to replace him, there is no justification to wait out October looking for that replacement.

Hendry should have had a list by early August, at the latest. When he was "reviewing" everything, he should have included contingencies for if he made a move. That would entail a list, and that list would include his assessment on the likelihood/possibility of getting a guy.

This hiring process, like almost everything else Hendry has done, is flawed from the beginning.

I agree Goony. Hell, I've had my list since 2004.

Just playing the advocate here, but how does Hendry have a complete list in August when some of his likely candidates were still gainfully employed and not allowed to be contacted?

He could have a list of who he would want. That list could have been broken down into gorups of those available and those not. He could still have contacted scouts, former GM's, and others to gather info about those on his list. He might not know if he can get his top choice due to availability, but he should have made enough evaluations for this process to take a week at best.

He could certainly have a list of those he'd like to contact without actually making the contact. The Marlins proved that it is very possible to move quickly; there's no reason the Cubs couldn't have done the same.

And most every business out there, including sports teams, have their ducks lined up in advance through back channel communications. At the very least, you should have a list of who you'd like, and you should have a decent idea of who would be interested in the job. Anything less than that is incompetent management.

I am sure he has a list, and he could still be waiting for permission to even talk to people on the list. He is not the type of guy who is going to say anything extra to the media than he has too.

He's also not the type of guy who can be trusted to do a competent job.

Is it possible Hendry is looking at a potential new manager that is involved in the playoffs and must wait until November for a hiring?

I think all of the speculation (Piniella, Girardi, and Brenly) is probably accurate, so I don't see any reason to wait until November.

I have serious reservations about what Hendry is going to do as far as finding a manager. He didn't sound like a man who had a plan on Monday, and I just don't think that's a good sign.

This offseason is way too important not to have had a plan in place for how to proceed.

I was disgusted by his display in the press conference. He looked completely clueless. He looked like a man who was forced to do a press conference after his wife left him.

In all honesty if it takes Hendry until November to get a manager, he should just be fired right now. I'm sure this will impact the RAM signings as well other FA. A player would like to see who they are playing for. The more Hendry waits, the more clueless he looks. No reason to take more then 2 weeks to get this taken care. Espically if the short list is 3 damn names.
