No, I don't know who at this point the manager will be. I heard whispers that aside from two of the coaches on the Baker staff, it wasn't what you'd call a hard-working staff. From a media standpoint, other than Larry, they just weren't very easy to deal with. Some of these guys were "Baker's guys," and they shared Dusty's distrust of the media, except, of course, for the San Francisco media. Whether it's Piniella or Girardi, I do know the next staff will work much harder, based simply on comparisons with the recently fired staff. what I know about Piniella and Girardi and what I've heard the front office will be demanding.

Wow, that's not good.

In past offseasons, was Larry helping out Prior and Wood rehab from their various injuries? If not, who was responsible for that or were the just working out with their own trainers?

I'm glad to see all of them go. Too bad our GM is still incompetent with his catch the ball theories. Honestly, what's the point of holding on to Hendry, unless of course he was totally brain washed by Baker and made most of those moves for him which I doubt. We need to be more aggressive in signing top free agents and making the right trades to help this ball club. Acquiring mediocre (if that) players like Izturis will only make us worse.

That's funny you say that because I used to see one of Baker's coaches at a bar, right by Wrigley Field, having scotches within 20 min. of the game ending. Whooping it up during loses. I was with a friend from England and he said see that's you problem right there. If this was England you would never see a coach happy after a loss. He would get his arse kicked for doing such a thing. In England we take our football very seriously.

Um, if you're talking about Chris Speier, he has a drinking problem. I don't think he was "whooping it up" so much as living his disease.

Unless you're talking about another of the coaches, but I can't see anyone else hanging out in bars near Wrigley.

Being around this team 24/7, can we really fault someone for turning to alcohol?

No, it wasn't Speier.

This is great news. This group was probably the most worthless group of coahes on earth. There were no fundamentals on the field and half the time when they showed the coaches on TV they looked asleep. By the way who was the coach?

I'm not going to judge a coach for going to a bar after a loss. I would.

I just think it furthers the belief that the Cubs are one big Country Club. Win or Loss everybody has fun...

I'd like to see Hendry move quickly to get a manager so he can get the coaches he wants. Like many have said, he's had since July to think this over and if he hasn't then he should be removed from being the GM now. I'm getting fed up with the lack of vision.

This is probably just as good, possibly better, than Dusty being gone. Finally the Cubs are seeing that a complete overhaul is needed.

I agree. Just firing Baker wasn't good enough for me and like you said, hopefully this is a sign of the organization realize major changes have to take place.

The only problem I see is that "overhaul" was one Hendry too short. He's still our GM with no plan. Or at least none to speak yet.

That's true. But at the very least this has to be a big time wake-up call to Hendry and should tell him that the club will not hesitate to move in another direction if he doesn't do the job.

Someone asked this earlier, but was O'Neal let go as well? Because he really should be...

Not to defend O'Neal...well I guess I am, who knows if he didn't get any backing from Baker on decisions or was bypassed? Either the guy is completely incompetent or something else was up.

I kinda thought that too. I mean for the past couple of years we've had the most UNDERACHEIVING group of players I have ever seen. If Bruce is correct, perhaps there wasn't alot of focus and passion from the coaching staff. And that is the reason why we saw players who looked "lost", or had no "drive" last year. I truely beleive that about our past incompitant "coaching staff". .

From the Cubs Media Dept.

Chicago Cubs Vice President and General Manager Jim Hendry has notified the Major League coaching staff (Gene Clines, Sonny Jackson, Juan Lopez, Gary Matthews, Dick Pole, Larry Rothschild and Chris Speier) that the new manager will be responsible for selecting his staff.

The coaches have been told that they will be considered for all available positions, but that they are free to pursue other opportunities.

I guess Baker needed horses so he didn't have to do anything. I admit a guy doesn't have to prove to the media that he is a hard worker but you can just watch this team and see that things just were not worked on, especially fundamentals.
