Cards down 8-0 to the Brewers.

Fixed!

On one hand, my favorite sports team's division lead is down to a half game.

On the other hand, tonight's performance damned the band of my existence to never pitch in a Cardinals uniform ever again.

Considering the fact that even should we make the playoffs we won't do much, I'll consider tonight's Marquis performance a win.

Wow, a guy with a 6.02 ERA has 14 wins on the year. Unbelievable.

He's nearly won fifteen games. How can anyone say he's had a bad year?

Jon Garland has 17 wins with a ERA close to 5.

17 wins! Let's give him the Cy Young!

Even head cheerleader Jeff "Gordo" Gordon is turning on the Red Birds.

What a miserable night at Busch Stadium this was! First, the feckless Cards heard booing from the Best Baseball Fans in America. Then the players heard sarcastic cheers when they inadvertently did something right.

Finally, we saw the middle-inning evacuation of disgusted fans. The horror show was too much for those with small children to witness.

On a serious note, leaving aside the pointlessness of talking about win/loss for pitchers, it's always bugged me that people look at win totals to judge a guy, over w%. A 16-14 season will get more attention than a 10-3 season. If a guy wins 15 games, it's considered an accomplishment, but if he loses 15, it's ignored. If a team is just about .500 when a guy pitches, they still talk about what a good job he did as long as he's won more than 12 games. You hear stuff like, "well, he struggled with a 4.85 ERA, but he still won 14".

Who cares about win totals? If anything it's w/l, but it should be neither.

Well said - I absolutely agree.

When it comes to pitcher stats, in order or importance:

WHIP > ERA+ > W/L % > Wins

This is a disaster, I was so looking forward to entertaining Mets fans with the "Cardinals take it in the Pujols" t-shirt my friend got me at Wrigley and that my wife will only allow me to wear to a Cardinals playoff game.

Page 2 has a great read on why the Cards have to lose:

My favorite:

This is a rattletrap car of a club, with Jason Isringhausen and Mark Mulder on the scrap heap and David Eckstein, Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen always just a lunge or a swing away. (I've got $5 down on Edmonds and a ruptured spleen in the office pool, but I'm seriously considering hedging with a bet on Rolen and a dislocated shoulder.) These guys are gamers, no doubt, but there's just too great a chance that the kids at home would be exposed to sustained periods of Preston Wilson and Scott Spiezio if they go down, and that's just not fair to the kids

wolf, nice forum (rock band tourney). Led Zep 81% of the vote - finally something I can agree with Cards fans on :D

Thanks. Are you registered over there?

No but on first glance it looks like a good board - decent signal to noise ratio - is it? I'll definitely read it from time to time.

Folks seem to be breathing a little easier over there tonight

The Cards are holding back Carp today and going with Reyes on short rest. I think holding back Carp is a no-brainer if they had a more well-rested starter, but I don't know about sending the kid up there on 3-days' rest. If the Cards lose and Houston wins, I would assume Carp goes tomorrow vs SF.
