Ex Cubs-Factor

Sully talks about how the Dodgers are trying to win a WS despite having three or more ex-Cubs on the rostor. I sent him a note, because the Ex-Cubs factor is over. In 2001 the D-Backs won the series with Grace, Gonzo and Morgan (and I think Miguel Batista). There's enough curse mumbo-jumbo going around with bringing up ones that are already broken.

Didn't the Red Sox also have 3+ former Cubs? Bellhorn, Mueller and a relief pitcher or something?

Frank Castillo. Ricky Gutierrez also played some for the 04 Sox, though I don't know if he was on the post-season roster.

Neither was. Gutz was only around when Nomar was hurt. Even in 2004 the best thing about Frank was his ability to pick a great looking wife.

I think there was one other team that won the World Series with 3 or more ex-Cubs, but I can't remember who or when. I do know that both teams won the World Series in the bottom of the 9th of Game 7 against the Yankees.

Edit: I found the article where I thought I read that. After the '01 WS, Grace compared it to the 1960 WS, won by the Pirates in the bottom of the 9th of Game 7 against the Yankees. Did the 1960 Pirates also have 3 or more ex-Cubs on the postseason roster?

Smokey Burgess, Gene Baker, and Don Hoak. The last of which Ron Berler explained away by saying he "conquered his Cubness" hating the organization and ownership so much from his brief stay in Chicago. He went from a team that finished 98-55 the year before (Brooklyn) to the Cubs who were 60-94.

Aside from that team, and the D-Backs, there have been no exceptions.

And coincidently those are the only two teams that won the WS courtesy of a walk off hit in the bottom of the 9th in game 7.

I also read that they might let Blalock go to get some more pitching.

This seems the most likely. He's the less liked of their three key bats of Tex, Young, and Hank.

Matthews Jr. is going to be a FA as is Carlos Lee. They already let go of Mench for Lee.

The team will have a different look. I'm curious to see how much money Hicks allocates in the offseason and which targets they pursue.

I was going to remind you of Joe Carter in 1993, but then noticed you specifically said in game 7 (that was in game 6). That would have been a perfect example of Cubness, since both the hero (Carter) and the goat (Mitch Williams) were former Cubs.

I wonder if that's the only time where one ex-Cub got the Series-winning hit off another ex-Cub.

Well, for what its worth I made the Ask Sully column on this one:

In regards to your Sept. 14 article, the Dodgers need to come up with something better then the ex-Cubs factor if they don't win the Series this year. The Ex-Cubs factor that Mike Royko wrote of was broken in 2001 when Mark Grace, Luis Gonzalez, Mike Morgan and Miguel Batista won the World Series with the Diamondbacks. --Damien Newton, East Rutherford, N.J. <--Damien=daymen

That's only because they had an ex-Cub manager in Brenly who voided the ex-Cub Factor.

uh, what? Brenly was never a Cubs manager, he did work for WGN back in 1990, but if you want to be vague, the Dodgers have an ex-Cubs catcher scout/coach in Little.
