I know Bruce gets a lot of love around here for some of his ideas and articles and I don't want to come across as a buttkisser but I was laughing when I read this line from today's story in the Herald.

After the Cubs clogged the bases with a pair of walks to start the third, Derrek Lee unclogged them with a 3-run homer.

I laugh too. Of course I had to explain it to the guy I share a cube with...who strangly is fond of his red stapler.

I still like "the Rake" as a nickname for Lee.

I'm sure Dusty Baker would like to remind everyone that walks are ok if you can run. Thus it is ok for Bynum to walk in front of a Lee HR. It is not however ok if Ramirez walks in front of a Jones HR because Ramirez won't run. Ramirez should swing the bat like a man. Which means that Bynum is a girl.

LOL- thanks for clearing that up

I chuckled a little with that one as well...

Couldn't resist.

Dusty and Jim must hate you.

Keep up the good work!

Any inside word on Freddi Gonzalez or Joe Girardi?

Not yet. Too early to tell, and everybody's playing it close to the vest.

Would Hendry really risk hiring Gonzalez, a would-be first-year manager, to lead this team when Big Jim only has a 2 yr leash himself?

That's a good and fair question. But how did those veteran, big-name managers _ Don Baylor and Dusty Baker _ do with the Cubs? So yes, I think Hendry might "risk" it with Gonzalez. Will he? I don't know.

Hendry's past actions makes me think he wouldn't risk going with the unproven guy. But as Bruce points out, that hasn't exactly worked for him so far. Will he treat it like the Izturis situation (defense didn't work for him before, maybe he should just get more of it), or will he treat it like Alou (big name slugger didn't pan out, let's go a different route)?

I still think that if it wasn't for Baker actually wanting to leave, Hendry would be more than happy to bring him back, which would seem to indicate he's not in a try something new sort of mood.

Our last two managers were also guys no longer wanted with their current clubs. I don't know if he'd go with just any new guy based on credentials, but I don't think Atlanta wants to lose Gonzalez, and Hendry has a lot of respect for Atlanta's system, from what I understand. Based on that, Gonzalez might qualify as an exception that Hendry could go for.

You can't trust an unproven guy like Joe Girardi to run a major league ballclub, let alone Fredi Gonzalez.

Jimy Williams will be our next manager.

Maybe Gene Lamont.

Jim Hendry will celebrate his hiring with a plate of cheese enchiladas.

Do you make it a point to make a Jim Hendry is fat "joke" in every post now? I used to enjoy reading what you wrote on here.

Hendry has earned all the ridicule we can pile on him.

If Hendry could lose 20 lbs would that make him a better GM? If the Cubs made the playoffs would you mind if Hendry was Jabba the Hutt?

Somebody else said this in another thread so while this isn't an original thought, it's worth repeating.

Hendry's performance as a GM should give people enough ammunition to use against him without bringing his weight into question. Like bittner77 said, Hendry's weight doesn't have any affect on him doing his job as a GM. And please, spare me the "he goes to eat too often and that distracts him from making competant moves" joke.

I'm not a Hendry fan either, but rip his performance and not his physique.
