Is Sir Donald ready for AA? Gallagher - Donnie 1-2 to start the year at AA would be quite the punch, i don't think either will finish the year in AA though.

Yup, I think Veal is ready for the jump. Gallagher will probably have the chance to earn his way to Iowa in the spring, but I'd like to see him start the year at AA too (with a quick promotion available). I think both will finish next year at Wrigley.

Boise and Tri-City tied at 1 after 1. Tyler Colvin with his 10th HR of the year, 5th straight game with a HR for Tyler.

He's hot hot hot hot!

It seems like 20-25 HRs a season could be feasible from him if he progresses as hoped, no?

The Idaho Statesman"]"It's nice that they (won) something," said Hawks manager Steve McFarland, who also won division titles with the Hawks in 2001 and 2002 and a league championship in 2002. "It's a little bit of a subdued celebration. We're holding back for a championship."

The division title is the 11th for the Hawks since taking their first in 1990. Boise last won a division title in 2004, also the last time it won a Northwest League title.

...

"My hat's off to this (coaching) staff, they got off to a rough start," said Oneri Fleita, the Chicago Cubs' director of player development. "I want to see these guys finish with a win. ... They owe it to the city, they owe it to the fans, they owe it to themselves."

...

Tyler Colvin evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning with his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.

It was the fifth straight game in which the first-round draft pick has homered. In the last five games, the lanky lefty has notched six hits — all for home runs. During that stretch, he's also scored seven runs and drove in 14.

"I always feel I'm going to be the guy to get it done," said Colvin, drenched with champagne from the post-game celebration as teammates carried on. "I've had a lot of at-bats this year and I'm feeling pretty tired, but my swing is still good."

Daytona Beach News-Journal"]One more Daytona loss or one more Palm Beach victory eliminates the Cubs from the pennant race.

The final home game of the regular season for Daytona was -- with an emphasis on was -- a classic pitching duel through seven scoreless innings. Daytona starter Donnie Veal was superb, striking out 12 batters and allowing just two hits in 6 1/3 innings before reaching the organization's 100-pitch limit.

"People who see the score won't realize what a great performance that young man had tonight," Cubs manager Buddy Bailey said. "He had good life on his fastball and got some strikeouts with his curveball. We just don't score any runs for him. He's on a 100-pitch limit and to me he's one of the best minor-league pitching prospects by far and we're sure not going to take a chance on jeopardizing his health and his career in Daytona Beach."

While the Cubs' pitching and fielding was horrible for one inning, the club's offense continued its stretch of scoreless innings to 21 going back.

You gotta love all the under 21 guys getting the champagne bath. Of course, Colvin's 21 on Tuesday, but there are 9 other guys who aren't all that close.

Interesting, I've never heard of the "organizational 100 pitch limit" before.

Really? It's been in place since Hendry has been around, at least. I believe it was Juan Cruz who missed a chance at a no-hitter because he reached the limit back in Lansing.

Has Felix Pie missed the playoffs since he's been in the Cubs system?

Daytona is the only one I can think of, and I'm not sure if he did or not.

Until last year he won the championship at every level he's been at (last year his team made the playoffs, although he didn't play because of his injury, but they lost the championship series). Daytona wound up as co-champions when he played there two years ago; the championship series was cancelled because of a hurricane (I believe the same hurricane that resulted in the postponement of the entire series when the Cubs were supposed to play in Miami).

Yeah, it was Cruz.

Hurricane Ivan.

Pie was with the Boise and Mesa teams that won the AZL and NWL championships in 2002. He was with Lansing when they won the MWL in 2003. He was with the 2004 Daytona team that won the co-championship. And his 2005 Jaxx team at least advanced to the SL championship team although he was out the whole second half.

Plus he's not scrawny! Guys who wear high socks with really thin legs oftentimes look weird and pretty darn funny.

From OnDeckBaseball.com:

Brevard County (MIL) exploded for 9 runs in the top of the 8th inning to absolutely stun Daytona (CHC), 10-0. Talk about a meltdown. The Cubs can’t afford any meltdowns right now, either. They are 2 games out of the 1st place in the East Division but time is running out. LHP Donnie Veal put on a show in this game, as he would punch out 12 batters in 6.1 overpowering innings of 2-hit ball for the Cubbies. Night-night gas. Veal has emerged as the Cubs’ top pitching prospect this season and is quickly climbing the overall pitching prospect chart, as well. The impressive 21-year-old southpaw has been nasty in his 14 starts in the FSL, relinquishing just 46 lousy knocks and 42 walks in 80.2 innings, registering 88 punchouts. His ERA is a breathtaking 1.67. His overall numbers are just as ridiculous. He’s given up 91 hits and 82 walks in 154.1 innings, striking out 174. His ERA is 2.16. Veal’s fastball routinely hits the low-90s and can even touch the mid-90s while his curveball shows great bite. He still needs to work on his change-up and command, but his raw ability is top-shelf. He projects to be a #2 starter in the majors. His stock be boomin’.

RHP Mitch Atkins outdueled LHP Alexander Smit to help lead Peoria (CHC) to a 3-0 win over Beloit (MIN). Atkins would strike out 7 batters in 7.2 scoreless frames of 5-hit ball to pocket his 13th win of the season. Smit surrendered 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings pitched for the Snappers. He struck out 10. Atkins is one of the biggest risers in the Cubs’ system this season. The 20-year-old right-hander ranks 3rd in the MWL in victories (13), places 4th in ERA (2.41), and is tied for 10th in strikeouts (127). He’s given up just 110 hits in 138.1 innings of work. Atkins has a real good feel for pitching, making him a potential #4 starter in the majors. He’s sneaky.

LF Tyler Colvin blasted 2 homers and knocked in 3 runs and DH D.J. Lewis went 2-for-4 with a double, a grand slam, and 2 runs scored, as Boise (CHC) doubled-up Tri-City (COL), 10-5. With the win, the Hawks clinched the East Division title. They will take on powerful Salem-Keizer (SFG) in the NWL Finals. Colvin has been swinging one of the hottest sticks in the NWL. The 20-year-old outfielder has gone deep in 5 straight games and he’s reached base safely in 15 out of the last 16 games, going 22-for-72 (.306) with 6 jacks, 14 runs scored, and 19 RBIs during that span. He now ranks 2nd in the NWL in RBIs (52) and runs scored (49), is tied for 2nd in total bases (126), and is 4th in dingers (11). He’s hitting .279. Colvin was the Cubs’ top pick in this year’s draft and he projects to be a starting corner outfielder in the majors. Lewis is hitting .253 with 15 doubles, 5 homers, 25 runs scored, and 31 RBIs in 47 games this season.
