I've read that Hendry started his career as a high school baseball coach who also was a mathematics teacher. Why do you suppose that someone who would teach a subject like that would find the concept of more baserunners by any means means more chances to score runs such a difficult concept to grasp? And do you suppose there is an epidemic in the Pinellas county area of Florida of people in their 30's not being able to multiply or divide (since Hendry is from that area)?

This is true. He was my JV football offensive line coach in the fall of 1980, at Miami Columbus HS. He was the head baseball coach and taught geometry. He is one intense mofo. That dude punished us everyday.

The Sun-Sentinel mentioned that when he was managing a summer league team while working with the Marlins, he was up at 6am everyday. I have friends who know people who work with him now who say he is in the office first thing in the morning and is there until 10 or 11 at night.

 

I think he was much more suited to be a field manager than to be a gm. He is a motivator, a people guy, not a numbers cruncher analytical guy like most GMs.

I do that and have done that since......I don't really remember when but it's been a long time. It merely means that he likes what he does. If there's one thing that experience has taught me, its that you shouldn't confuse working hard for working smart.

I am not sure of the mechanics of it, but I always think of Jerry Krause when someone asks this question. Krause was a scout for the Sox, and years later became the GM of a basketball team. Now he's scouting for the Mets (or someone else in MLB, right?). Its weird how that works.

Guess you and I see it differently then. I was enjoying the exchange of background info and discussion about career paths to front offices for non-athletes. As I said, there are plenty of our places for me to vent my frustration over his performance.

He made use of some good connections to get opportunities and then made the most of those opportunities. One the other jv football coaches and the jv baseball coach was Paul Maneri. Paul Maneri is the current head baseball coach at Notre Dame. His father, Demi Maneri, was the long time head coach at Miami-Dade community college. Demi asked Hendry if he wanted to help manage a summer league team in Maine, I believe. From this, he got an opportunity to be the head baseball coach at Creighton. He took Creighton, hardly a traditional powerhouse, to the college world series.

 

Hendry's connection to the Cubs was through Ed Lynch, former Cubs gm, former Mets pitcher and Miami Columbus HS graduate. I know Hendry went to the Marlins, as a scout, when they started in 1993. I don't know who Hendry knew at the Marlins or if he got that job solely from his success at Creighton. Former Marlins 1B Orestes Destrade is a Miami Columbus grad but I doubt he had anything to do with Hendry working for the Marlins as a scout. My guess is that Demi Maneri provided the connection at the Marlins.
