Wuertz has been mowing the competition down as of late. Since being recalled to the majors, his ERA is around 1.7 with 26 Ks in 21 innings with a BAA below .200. This isn't any different than he was doing in Iowa after taking a couple of weeks to get his stuff back together. We all thought he was going to have a dominant year after last year, and he's doing it again, just most of it was in AAA. I can't believe that there's not another reason he took so long to get recalled to the majors when Aardsma, Novoa, and others got considerable opportunities while not doing nearly as well as him.

I've been holding down the Wuertz bandwagon all year long.

Wuertz for closer

Can't do any worse than Dempster has been doing lately.

I think we could have the next Rob Nen if we'd give him a shot.

What was he sent down for? Showing his pitches in theatPirates game way back at the beginning of this year? I ask this in all seriousness, because that's the only reason I could think of then or now.

He had a bad Spring Training.

I know you're being sarcastic, but Christ, who didn't besides Aramis?

I guess Lee's was pretty decent if you count the WBC.

There was a rumor going around that he was a pretty heavy drinker. Maybe he was getting that stuff in order.

So was the Farns. Need someone to get three outs, take Wuertz. Need someone to tackle a batter or kick a fan, call da Farns.

Hendry supposedly has a drinking problem as well (unsubstantiated rumor!). Maybe he should spend 1/2 a season in AAA as well. His ST wasn't exactly stellar either.

I've never heard that Wuertz rumor, but it would explain a lot. A bad ST shouldn't get you banished to AAA after putting up solid numbers in the bigs the previous season.

Wuertz for closer

I'm a quiet member of the bandwagon - I read a lot more than I post - but I've definitely been right there with you the whole way. I was nuts about this guy last year, and he was the part of our bullpen this year that I was most looking forward to.

The wierdest thing about Wuertz is that his number one comp on PECOTA is Brad Lidge. Lidge has crashed and burned but oh well. The weird thing here is that PECOTA doesn't take in account a pitcher's repetoire and Lidge and Wuertz have similar ones.

That slider is ridiculous. If he continues his consistent control, he'd be a good closer.

But considering the Cubs don't like the idea of "thinking outside the box", I doubt we'll see Wuertz as a closer. But it wouldn't surprise me, if a team like TB or Kansas City who rely on cheap labor, come a calling in the off-season. (sarcasm coming) and maybe, just maybe, the Cubs find that speedy guy with no tools, who can be a leadoff guy.

Pagan had an absolutely stellar one. Dopirak's was pretty darn good too, IIRC.

This is why he is far and away better than Novoa or Aardsma. They have one pitch, 97mph heat and thats it....and their control on the fastball isnt that great either.

Novoa is a suck ass and no way should he have been in front of Wuertz on the depth chart this year. Its a good thing the Cubs sucked this year because Wuertz was in AAA waaay to long. Howry, Eyre, and Wuertz is a very SOLID pen.

Did I miss something? What happened with Wuertz?

He was horrible during ST, and during his one or two appearances he had in April before being sent down, he looked like he hadn't gotten back on track yet.

I don't blame them for sending him down, he obviously had something he needed to straighten out at the beginning of the year...but he fixed it within a few weeks in AAA and dominated out of the pen (dominated like Rich Hill was doing down there) from there on. But for some reason, they never wanted to bring him up, they left him down there FAAAAAAAR longer than was necessary.

Oh, due to the timing of this thread, I thought something had happened. This is a topic of discussion for, say, I don't know, 2 months ago.

I brought it up after seeing he had another outing with more Ks than innings pitched...there's nothing wrong with bringing it back up now, especially considering all of the pitchers we have had, and continue to put on, the DL.

I don't disagree, but you can see where I was thrown there for a minute, that's all.

I've been a Wuertz backer as well since last year. Always liked the guy and I never understood why he was in AAA for so long.
