I don't know if you guys saw this but during the Cubs postgame today they had Ron Coomer pick his 2007 team. It looked like this:

1B-Lee

2B-Soriano

SS-Izturis

3B-A-ram

LF-Hideki Matsui

CF-Pierre

RF-Jones

C-Barrett

Not a bad team would put up enough runs to overcome decent pitching.

I would love to have that lineup, We would definetley put runs on the board..All we would need is pitching and we would for sure make the playoffs

I know I'm gonna get crap for this, but I'd rather have Murton than Matsui. I mean, if you're gonna go after Matsui, why not just go all out and get Cabrera? Sure, he'd be more expensive, but Matsui is old.

I would actually agree with this. Matsui is not a significant enough upgrade to both spend 13 million a season on him and trade away the pieces it would take to get him. If we were going to get someone to replace Murton, it might as well be Lee so that we don't have to lose the people we'd trade. Of course, I don't think Lee is worth the money either as an upgrade over Murton, so I would rather keep that money after Soriano is signed to 1) sign a platoon partner for RF and 2) Add the extra money to the pitching rather than replace an already decent piece to the puzzle.

I would like to see Coomer's pitching staff.

Well here is mine:

Zambrano

Zito

Lackey

Weaver

Marshall/Hill/Marmol

Jeff Weaver is arguably one of the worst starters in the entire majors right now.

Jeff Weaver will also eat up innings, win 12-14 games a year, and have a era around 4.

Weaver has an ERA around 6 this year. What proof is there that he'll rebound?

No Matsui for me. Murton is a very cost-effective solution for the OF and unless he could be replaced with a genuine superstar I'd keep him to save $$ for Soriano or the rotation.

If we are gonna get Soriano, you have enough power in that line-up to afford Matt Murton's patience, and possible + .350 OBP in LF.

But if the Tribune decides to open their wallet and get those players, PLUS a nice #2 SP, then I'm not gonna argue. :)

By the way, MY sp would be.

Zambrano

Zito

Marshall

#4 (take your pick)

Putting Prior in the BP? Trading him?

Coomer made 386 plate appearances for the Cubs in 2001. Amazing that team won 88 games while giving some much playing time to multiple players of Coomer's calibre.

If it weren't for the late season injury to Flash Gordon I think they would have likely made the playoffs that year.

Not when you have Sammy going absolutely nuts. Those were pre-steroid Bonds-numbers.

If one player could carry a team then the Rangers would have won the WS all three years they had ARod.

Sosa's numbers were still better in 2001 than ARod's best year with the Rangers-which was actually 2001 as well

Sosa: .328/.437/.737 64 HR 160 RBI's-OPS+=201

ARod: .318/.399/.622 52 HR 135 RBI's-OPS+=164

Their pitching also was terrible that year. They had 1 starter with an ERA under 5, and only 2 under 6.

The Cubs pitching however was really, really good that year.

2 ERA's under 4, our 5th starter had an ERA of 4.52

All the relievers who pitched 45 innings or more had an ERA under 4 (Todd Van Poppel led the way with a 2.45 ERA)

One player can carry a team on one side-it was basically Sosa and the pitching, but that was almost enough.

My rotation would go:

Z

Schmidt

Marshall

Hill/Marmol/Guzman

Prior

WAAA WUUUAAAAAGGGGHHHH.

Let's start with Pitchers who could actually be with us all year and start pitching on the first day.

Uh. On the DL people? Heard of it? That's where I'll have Prior.

Wait a minute, where the hell did Ron Coomer come from? I thought he disappeared.

He does the local FOX post game show here in the Chicagoland area. So he is only seen after the Saturday FOX games.

He does the post game for both the Cubs and White Sox games.
