Can someone enlighten me of why the Cubs weren't interested in Abreu?

I tune into FOX today to see Abreu hitting 3rd in the best lineup in baseball. Somehow, I think the offensively challenged Cubs could have found a spot for him in our lineup.

It was more of that Abreu wasn't interested in the Cubs than anything-the Yankees got a special deal because Abreu wanted to play for them, and so was willing to waive his no-trade clause without restriction. The Cubs might have still been able to get him, but it would have cost a lot more, and it still wouldn't have been completely guaranteed that he would waive it.

looked at another way, the cubs have one more hit than the yankees today and 7 fewer runs. yea, that's a small sample size but fairly indicative of the two teams offenses.

As of right now, Abreu has gotten on base 12 times in 16 PAs so far in this current series against Boston, and the Yanks have scored in double digits all three games.

It pains me that Hendry will never pursue this type of player.

The Yankees were willing to take Cory Lidle from the Phillies as well.

And the Cubs couldn't use Cory Lidle?

that yankee lineup is lethal. they all work the count. 10 walks for beckett today - and ten more yankee runs.

Beckett allowed 16 baserunners in 5 2/3 IP which is ridiculous and the Yankees had 23 baserunners total today.

Do you know Hendry never pursued Abreu? In the offseason, all I heard was if the Phillies traded him, it would likely take Prior, Pie, and possibly more. At the deadline, Abreu said that to waive his no trade clause, a team would have to pick up his huge option (though as someone else said he waived that stipulation because he wanted to go to the Yanks). Neither option is very appealing to me for a guy that has shown signs that he may be getting worse. I love Abreu and think he would be great, I also don't strongly support Hendry in many of his moves, but to assume that he never pursued Abreu is incorrect to the best of my knowledge.

I didn't say that the Cubs couldn't use Cory Lidle. I was just saying that the Yankees were willing to take Lidle as well and that helped the trade go through. That and Abreu was willing to waive his no trade clause for the Yankees - something I don't think he would have for the Cubs.
