Fred,

When do you get back on the road?

Funny you should ask..... I'm sitting at a loading dock right now in Alsip, IL waiting to get loaded for beautiful Waxahachie, TX !!

Believe it or not, I've been to Waxahatchie. So, what route are you taking there? Are you coming through Little Rock through Texarkana or going through Oklahoma?

Well.... I would have gone through Memphis / Little Rock / Texarkana, but the damned load got canceled. Now, I'm sitting back at the house calling other brokers on the phone to see if I can strike a a better deal. Failing that, I'll be going into the city in the morning to pick up a load for Los Angeles for Monday.

Hey Fred, do you load your own trucks or do you use humpers? Do you know how I could get a job regarding the latter?

that's legal in the states? wow...missed my calling.

The term that Balsa is looking for here is Lumper, not humper. Lumper services are the scourge of the transportation industry. The are set up and operate similarly to ManPower and other temp labor outlets in that they pay the workers near minimum wage without benefits, and charge the customer a really significant markup. Typically 300% or more.

On those rare occaisions when I get a load that is not palletized and must be hand loaded or unloaded, I will check to see if there are lumper services available, and if so, I will use them as I am able to pass the cost on to my customer. If there are no lumper services available, I might call ManPower and use them, but failing that, I will refuse the load. I don't finger print freight for anybody for any reason.

Balsa, if you're really serious about getting into a job along these lines, I'll make some inquiries for you, but I don't think you would be happy with the situation. I think you could get a part time job with United Parcel Service doing the same kind of work for a little more money. In any case, let me know if you're really interested, and I'll check around.

With that type of endorsement who wouldn't want to work for a lumper?!

The Cards' win over Cincy today means that if the Cubs sweep this weekend, they will not be any more than 7 out no matter what the Reds do in Pittsburgh.

Let's do it, Cubbies.

Up to the minute CUBS' magic numbers:

St. Louis 55
Cincinnati 52
Houston 48
Milwaukee 48
Pittsburgh 36

Go CUBS !!

How do you figure out? If we sweep and the Reds sweep, we'll still be 9 1/2 behind them in both the WC and division-of course then we'd only be 9 games out of the WC (with St. Louis then leading the WC because the Reds would be 1/2 game ahead in the division)

Where in LA?

Actually, it's Calexico, down below the Salton Sea.... but I'm pretty sure I'll be over in Metro LA to reload Monday afternoon.

Heh, I used to live in El Centro for a year or so. Enjoy the 115+ degree heat. :)

No, but with my affinity for really cold weather, I'm guessing I wish I had.

I was there one night years ago when your spit would freeze before it hit the ground. They tell me that doesn't happen until it gets about 40 below. Whatever, I don't ever want to experience that again !!

That's ok Fred. I just wanted do demonstrate my knowledge of the trucking system. Which I think I accomplished by saying 'humper'. :P

I don't seriously want it as a job. It doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy at all.

Although I am still looking for jobs for next year (in case anyone has a good offer)

I will be at the game tomorrow. This will be my first time a Wrigley since '97, and my first Cub/Cardinal game. I am pretty excited. :D

Uhh, I wouldn't advise drinking before a long trip to Texas...

I'm from texas, and can tell you, that is the ONLY way to make a trip across it.
