But how many speedsters/leadoff guys have cannons for arms?

For which position? I think it's hard to compare arm strength of leadoff hitters if they're playing different positions.

Pierre would have to hit .330 to be an effective player. That is the reason he shouldnt be resigned. All the other things that he isnt good at are only icing on the cake.

Taveras immed. came to mind, how many speedster leadoff guys are there in general? (Of course, he has struggled at getting on-base)

Hmm, do you count Ichiro as a speedster leadoff guy? I see Ichiro, Dave Roberts, Brian Roberts, Damon?, Furcal?, Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, Rollins, Posednik, Figgins-those are the other leadoff hitters out of the 19 that qualify that have at least 20 stolen bases (Sizemore had 18)-I'm not sure you would count those players as speedster leadoff hitters (that's a really hard thing to define). Looking at some players who didn't qualify, Freel, Lugo, and Luis Castillo could both be put in that category also. Of course, half of those players are not outfielders.

You have 4 potential OF'ers, although I don't consider Ichiro a leadoff hitter in that manner, I'll use him. 1 cannon, the rest are avg. to below avg. That ratio isn't too unusual combining 2 + plus arms like Ichiro ans Taveras with Pierre, Posednik, Damon, and Roberts.

I also think hitters like Reyes & Ramirez will be middle of the order type hitters, but at the top of the order b/c of the speed. Rollins has more power and a lower batting avg. than most at the top.

No, it's not that unusual about the arms. I was actually surprised when I was looking through about how many people batting leadoff have that many stolen bases. I was expecting a much smaller list than that.

Pierre is the least of our worries. We need to figure this pitching thing, PRONTO. It's a mess.

This entire team is a mess and with Hendry and Baker here I see no end in sight.

If Patterson could teach himself to lead off he would have been a guy with a good arm, fast, and pretty much everything I guess besides getting on base or making contact enough.

He isn't a lead-off hitter though. He can lay down a bunt and use his speed, he can hit with power, but it's just not him. He always seemed out of his element at the top of the order. When the Orioles have used him in the 6th or 7th spot this year, he's done much better.

I wish this stupid association between speed and a leadoff man would just die. THe point of a leadoff man is to get on base. Not to be supersuper fast. If you cant get a hit it doesnt matter how fast you can run.

Agreed. See Kevin Youkilis.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The 2007 starting rotation is looking much like Carlos Zambrano and the 4 question marks. Part of me wants to believe that Hendry will pull off some miraculous deal for a top of the line starter but being a Cub fan I know that this probably won't happen.

In the offseason the Cubs are going to have to figure out what to do with the rotation, but its not something that can be figured out PRONTO. Right now is the evaluation time. We got the 4 kids and Z out there with Prior, Marshall and (shudder) Rusch lurking on the DL. That's eight guys. If you consider that Z is a lock to be a stud in the rotation and Rusch (shudder) is a lock not to be that gives the Cubs six guys to fill four spots.

They'll probably only need to get one arm this offseason. Hopefully its a big arm and not an inning eater.

i would say that perhaps the greatest lead off hitter of our generation, rickey henderson, had a juan pierre like arm. and he was also a butcher in the outfield. he just brought a little more to the table.

you can see right now that when our pitchers throw well we play well. we do not have the type offense that can save pitchers from bad outings.

the problem is that most of the year we play in a park that is not very pitcher friendly. our pitchers can throw well and still give up hr's when the wind is terrible. look at how maddux throws at chavez ravine! exactly how he threw in april when the wind blew in....coincidence?

we need better starters but we simply have to have some pop in the lineup. we can not have a limeup that hits fewer than 45hrs in the of.

i think the decision that must be made is do we try to win immediately or do we go young and try to win in a few years. we are a very long way from contending right now

Holy understatement, Batman!
