He just doesn't look right wearing that LA hat.

or #36.

Brad Penny wears #31.

I wonder if Brad Penny wouldn't give up the #31 or if Maddux refused it because he is the "new guy".

I'm guessing the latter.

I know nobody will believe me, but I heard them announce the pitching lineups on the radio on the way home from work tonight, and honestly I found myself thinking "wouldn't it be just typical if Maddux went out there and tossed a no-hitter."

Good for Greg - I'd like to see a guy like him eventually leave the game of baseball on a relatively high note and I just don't think he would have had that as a Cub.

Beleive ya. I was just thinking tonite on the way home that I hope Greg pitches like an 8 inning shutout (because alot of fans on the dodgers board) to prove them wrong.

Maddux probably really isn't too interested in chatting in the 3rd inning of this game. But it's a new team and a new catcher. I can't help but wish him well.

A rookie catcher, at that.

Kudos to Maddux.

Greg doesn't seem like the type to ask for a number from someone that has it.... IMO Penny should have had a Maddux jersey with 31 waiting for him in the clubhouse when he got there.

But wouldn't that cost Brad alot of PENNIES to have it done? 8)

The LA Times[/url]"]

The score was 2-0 when the rains came, and although he's never pitched a no-hitter in the majors, Maddux agreed with Grady Little that his outing was over, telling the manager that he'd had a no-hitter in Little League, and that was good enough for him.

"If we had more than two runs I would have loved to go for it," Maddux said. "But in a two-run game, especially in this small park, you never know what's going to happen. We have to win as many games as we can." ...

"I've gone back out after a delay in the second or third inning, but never after six innings," he said. "I didn't want to be selfish."

He also hadn't pitched wearing a number other than 31. Brad Penny, the ace of the Dodgers staff and All-Star starter, has that number, so Maddux wore 36 and didn't want to be drawn into a squabble over it.

Penny said he was willing to give Maddux 31, but not until he bartered with another player who wears a number he's OK with. Perhaps Maddux will stay with 36, at least until he gives up a hit.

FWIW, Bill Plaschke wrote about the uniform number in the LA Times.

Penny earlier told reporters that he was trying to work out a switch with other teammates so he could give Maddux the number while obtaining another number that he liked.

That apparently didn't work, but there have no been no ensuing explanations.

"It's not even an issue," Penny told The Times' Steve Henson on Thursday night.

Maddux, who has survived all these years by staying above controversy, said the same thing when asked about the number.

"Whatever, man, I don't care," he said.

Obviously, Maddux won't quit over it. Maddux won't even raise his voice over it. As Thursday indicated, the new number certainly won't affect his pitching or his sub-zero temperament.

But his old number was important enough to him that he asked for it.

And it was important enough that some Dodgers employees also asked Penny to change.

Sure, it's just another shirt.

And Greg Maddux is just another pitcher.

Scott Boras also had something to say.......

"Tradition is a time-honored thing in baseball," said Scott Boras, Maddux's agent. "But apparently for some players, that's been forgotten."

It doesn't matter that Penny was already there. It's common courtesy in baseball that, when a team trades for a superstar, a player currently wearing the superstar's number customarily changes to a different number so the superstar can wear his number. It's no different than when Barrett changes his number on the Cubs when they traded for Nomar.

Penny could say that he started the all-star game this year, so he is a "superstar" too.

To me, it's common courtesy to take whatever number is given to you, especially if you're just a 2 month rental.

In 2 starts with the Dodgers:

1-0, 2 GS, 12IP, 7H, 2R, 5/4 K/BB, 0.67 ERA, 0.92 WHIP....we're not cursed.

The July 29 Cubs start compares.

Maddux pitching another great game. He has given up two hits to the Giants' hitters after seven innings. Both hits were given up in the first inning. Currently, the score is 0-0.

Edit to add: He has only thrown 60 pitches through 7 innings.

personally, I am sitting here spitting nickels. amazing how he finds an extra 4-5 mph on his fastball after changing uniforms. amazing how he's hitting all his spots. amazing how he's not shaking off his catcher to get to that crappy looping curveball.

suddenly, Greg Maddux cares again.
