Thanks for posting a link. I guess I'm underwhelmed by these deals.

Thanks for all the info you have shared with us. I think its pretty cool that someone in the media still posts on a message board and leaves themselves open to critizism. In your opinion, what would you like to have seen the Cubs do?

Thanks

Ben

I wouldn't have given Walker away for one thing. I would have gone the "prospect" route with Maddux, provided they were the right prospects. I just don't see this trade as making a big, positive impact. Izturis is probably OK in the right spot in the right lineup, but how many times have we seen that with this outfit?

Correct. We will see him batting 2nd in an infield with Mabry and Neifi. Wrong lineup, wrong spot.

I've got no problem with Walker for Ceda. Walker wouldn't be back next year, anyway, and Ceda may or may not contribute in the future. This organization has developed some decent pitchers in recent years.

However, I can't believe Hendry did the deal for Izturis instead of a couple prospects. Izturis - whose glove is probably going to be worth three wins next year - is redundant on a team with Cedeno and Perez.

I just don't understand the whole point of the Izturis deal.

If the point of trading MAddux was to improve the ballclub, I don't know how that happened, given we already have a good fielding, weak (though slightly better) hitting middle infielder in Perez.

If it was to clear salary, as is normally the case in such deadline deals, why not take hte prospects he mentioned? Why take on a $4million+ albatross (like Perez/Rusch/et al) in the process, AND send money to the Dodgers?!?

I can only assume that Hendry really WANTS Izturis, which baffles the mind, since his own team valued him highly enough to move him out of position most of the this year and then traded for a BETTER shortstop (Lugo) at a CHEAPER cost that we got Caesar.

I know he fits the Hendry mould of the day- slick fielding athlete. But we weakened an already weak offense yesterday by replacing Walker with Izturis in the order, and frankly, don't see us getting Soriano for 2B next year, and I doubt there are any better 2bs on the market this winter.

He's painted himself into a corner now. he HAS to land a PREMIER left fielder this offseason, or risk the same disasterous type of seson we had this year. there aren't any other positions open to add someone, unless Hendry proves to be an even bigger baseball idiot that I think him, and lets Ramirez go without a big-time fallback available.

So Hendry just basically guaranteed us the identical lineup to this year with a POSSIBLE left field upgrade. He's guaranteed at least two questionable hitting spots in the order instead of one.

Good LORD- he'd beter add some absolute STUDS to the rotation.

THAT is the only way the team will compete next season, and I honestly don't see it happening. The only 2 guys out there on the free agent list that fit would be Zito and Schmidt (Schmidt is a FA next year right?) and I don't think Zito is a good fit for pitching half his games in Wrigley.

The only other way we get a stud pitcher is via a trade that gives up even more of our offense.

Somehow I get the feeling we're going to be praying for the comebacks of Wood and Prior once again and putting all our eggs in one basket.

Not a good way to win championships - that's for darn sure.

Here is what the Cubs gained: They picked up shortstop Cesar Izturis from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Maddux. Izturis is a Gold Glove-caliber defender who has yet to prove himself offensively, as his low lifetime OBP of .295 suggests.

...

His low OBP is definitely a red flag, especially in an offense that’s already on-base challenged.

Good job, Bruce.

Any confirmation on who the prospects could have been? Kemp or Guzman like Carroll reported?

If this is true it appears we have the worst GM in baseball. This trade just keeps getting worse.

Why would you want a guy who's sporting a line of 410/493/672 at AAA when you can have Izturis? I surely hope he was not one of the prospects.

Just how much is Reinsdorf paying Hendry to tank this team? What a horrible, horrible deal.

sounds to me like hendry tried to go the prospect route with the dodgers but they wouldnt bite. it was also stated that kemp was probably considered one of the three untouchables by the dodgers.

I find it extraordinarily hard to believe, that Colletti, would budge on any of of Kemp, Guzman or Ethier, for, despite his HOF career, a declining pitcher in his 40’s. That would have been the act of a mindless GM, I’m certain Hendry asked perhaps, if he had a Lugo to trade, he would have ended up with Guzman, etc. I to am disappointed with Izturis – I would have settled for a low A high ceiling prospect – but, seriously what was expected?

This has probably been talked about somewhere in the bowels of the 70+ page Maddux trade thread, but it seems likely to me that this deal has Tim Wilken's influence all over it.

Wilken was with the Blue Jays when Izturis was first signed, wasn't he?
